Estimator- Metals

Responsibilities

• Handle the project from the first estimate through contract formalization.
• Identify gaps in project information, ask clarifying questions, and develop comprehensive metal cost evaluations.
• Provide innovative solutions to cost, lead‑time, trade partner, and material issues.
• Make reliable cost predictions and estimate across all construction aspects.
• Prepare conceptual metal cost estimates and cost studies at schematic or feasibility levels.
• Create detailed estimates, develop variance summaries during design evolution, and support value‑engineering studies.
• Assemble and present complete estimate packages to any audience.
• Collaborate with the entire project team to define staffing and project requirements.
• Understand unit costs and factors influencing construction cost.
• Prepare detailed instructions to bidders, trade‑specific clarifications, and comprehensive bid packages for sub‑tiers.
• Manage the bidding process: solicit bids, communicate with bidders, evaluate subcontractor proposals, and use bid tally sheets.
• Work with Operations (Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers) to refine estimates and ensure alignment with project approach, schedule, and logistics.
• Recommend subcontractor awards and negotiate & finalize subcontracts with trade partners.
• Participate in RFP responses and formal project presentations.
• Engage and develop business with new and existing customers.
• Lead and facilitate value‑engineering sessions with project and design teams.
• Review construction contracts to identify key risks affecting the estimate.
• Lead, manage, and motivate project teams during preconstruction.

• 5+ years of structural steel and/or miscellaneous metals estimating.
• Experience with fabrication and field erection costs.
• Ability to read structural, architectural, and shop drawings.
• Strong understanding of AISC standards and steel construction practices.
• Experience pricing structural steel, stairs & railings, miscellaneous metals, decking, joist/girder packages.
• Proficient in Bluebeam and Excel.
• Ability to prepare bid packages, clarifications, and exclusions.
• Risk identification expertise: access crane requirements, schedule constraints, connections, tolerances, erection, piece count complexity, height, welding requirements, and crane picks.
• Collaboration with operations: ability to gain buy‑in from superintendents and foremen.
• Coordination between GC preconstruction teams and SPW.
• Preferred: experience with Tekla, SDS2, Advance Steel, or BIM; design‑build experience; experience in a company that does fabrication and erection.
