Position Overview

HDR is looking for a Data Center Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services team in Denver, Colorado. The role involves designing and coordinating mechanical systems for data center, mission‑critical, and commercial projects from concept through construction administration.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Help grow a collaborative team that promotes career growth, high‑quality construction documents, client satisfaction, and peer support.
  • Coordinate the work of Mechanical Engineers, EITs, and BIM Specialists with the multidisciplinary team throughout project development.
  • Mentor, organize, and facilitate the growth of junior staff.
  • Coordinate workload to complete documents on schedule.
  • Technical responsibilities:
    • Assume a substantial role in mechanical design for data center/mission‑critical projects.
    • Work with clients to understand project‑specific requirements around reliability, growth increments, first cost versus life‑cycle cost, sustainability, construction schedules, and future flexibility.
    • Provide detailed design and coordination with multidisciplinary team members.
    • Attend design meetings and lead mechanical discussions.
    • Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document work sessions with the Project Manager, Project Architect, and other disciplines.
    • Participate in reviews with governing agencies for code compliance.
    • Provide design support during construction, including field observations, submittal and shop drawing review, and RFI support.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Travel as required to job sites or other HDR offices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (PE or P.Eng).
  • Experience in commercial or institutional facilities.
  • Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, and manufacturer selection software.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
  • Experience with Newforma Project Center and/or Project Wise Document Management Software.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Technical and specification writing skills.
  • NCEES Registration.
  • Strongly motivated and professionally initiated, focused on client outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of current industry codes and standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 5 years of consulting engineering experience in the design of high‑reliability mechanical systems.
  • Previous Data Center/Mission‑Critical experience; an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm is desired.
  • Strong desire to stay current with trends of the fast‑paced industry of mission‑critical.
  • Working knowledge of Uptime Topology standards, ASHRAE TC 9.9, ASHRAE 90.4, and ISO standards regarding PUE, CUE, and WUE.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, AFT Fathom (or similar piping analysis software), HVAC loads program (IESVE Load Calculation Software knowledge preferred), and Microsoft Office.
  • General knowledge of the inputs required for CFD modeling.
  • Preference given to local candidates.
Professional Development
  • Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged.
  • Participation in professional development seminars, courses, workshops, or conferences is encouraged and should be approved in advance of attendance.
  • Additional industry certifications such as Uptime ATD are encouraged.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements for any certification or license.
