Jr. Estimator

Sterling Construction Company, Inc.

Location: Denver, CO

Pay Range: $80,000 – $110,000 per year

Salary Type: Hourly

Responsibilities
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings and attend pre‑bid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Prepare estimates by calculating various statistical data such as quantity take‑offs, material price lists, labor costs per man‑hour and equipment costs, and apply them to complete scope of work.
  • Review and research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines and precedence for future estimates.
  • Incorporate historical data into unit and man‑hour figures.
  • Participate in developing bid package estimate documents.
  • Maintain files of working documents for backup to estimating figures, including current accurate information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • Review design options and recommend the best solution based on cost, engineering quality or availability of materials.
  • Follow awarded contracts as assigned, possibly including estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, and procuring materials.
  • Assist with takeoffs and project engineer responsibilities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 1–2 past internships in heavy civil, commercial building, or road construction.
  • 1–2 past internships working with subcontractors.
  • 1–2 college estimating courses and/or estimating internship.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience communicating with external stakeholders is preferred.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to ask follow‑up questions to gather accurate information.
  • Proficiency with fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, and ability to apply them to practical situations and calculations.
  • Knowledge of geometric formulas and equations for calculating area, volume, etc. in takeoffs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
