The Energy Services Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing utility strategy, development, and energy acquisition for a growing data center portfolio. These activities may include, but are not limited to, electrical, gas, water, and on-site power generation utility and individual power provider coordination. This role reports to the Director of Power Solutions. Over time, this role is expected to build a team of utility direct reports proportional to the growth of the company.

Responsibilities

Utility Infrastructure
  • Support all site development efforts by determining and executing site-specific energy infrastructure strategies across the data center portfolio.
  • Manage federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and procedures pertaining to site-specific on-site behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter power solutions, including siting restrictions, utility service agreements, interconnection agreements, available auxiliary services, power purchase agreements, and environmental concerns.
  • Research, convey, and coordinate site-specific energy infrastructure strategies with leadership, site development, engineering, and financial teams.
  • Represent the company as the primary point of contact with respective utility, individual power provider, and other energy industry professional account managers.
  • Evaluate existing and prospective utility infrastructure and coordinate with utilities to understand scope, time to delivery, and financial responsibilities of infrastructure improvements required to support all company projects.
  • Develop and coordinate expected load ramp schedules and coordinate with utilities to develop scheduled deliverables based on ready-for-service timelines.
  • Advance utility infrastructure development through completion of construction.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering and construction departments during utility infrastructure development and construction activities to ensure utility infrastructure adheres to internal engineering and construction requirements.
  • Prepare utility infrastructure budgets and schedules for all company projects.
  • Develop internal processes and leadership presentations to streamline decision making.
  • Manage day-to-day communications with energy supply companies for all company projects.
  • Manage energy procurement efforts for all company projects, including request-for-bid process management, energy supplier selection, and negotiating supplier agreements with support from various stakeholders.
  • Provide energy supply companies with all requested company deliverables including but not limited to load letters, ramp schedules, etc.
  • Prepare energy budgets and energy models to support overall project development, engineering, and sales activities.
  • Research and understand energy procurement processes, pricing, rate schedules, applicable rate tariffs, contract structures, laws and regulations, etc.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience in managing utility infrastructure development and energy procurement. Data center development experience preferred.
  • Experience with relationship building and coordinating with utility companies, energy companies, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven record of collaborating across all levels of internal and external stakeholder organizations, from executive leadership, development, engineering, and finance to marketing/sales and legal teams.
  • Deep understanding of electrical transmission and substation engineering, procurement, construction, and contracting.
  • Deep understanding of natural gas transmission and supply, procurement, and contracting, including real-time markets and hedging.
  • Strong administrative and technical knowledge of utility infrastructure and energy procurement methodologies, including but not limited to electric, gas, and water infrastructure.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with keen attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Disciplined self-starter and self-motivated with willingness to operate under diverse conditions within a start-up business environment.
  • Able to work calmly under stressful situations and in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing deadlines, demands, and priorities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with diverse collaborators, including potential customers, and facilitate productive discussions.
  • Organization and time management: able to plan, schedule, and organize tasks related to the job to achieve goals within or ahead of established time frames.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including but not limited to SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
