Primary Responsibilities
HDR Engineering is looking for a Bridge Inspector EIT/Coordinator to join our National Infrastructure Inspection Team. The role involves performing local and national bridge inspections and occasional office engineering (design, CADD, analysis). The Inspector will assist the lead inspector in performing bridge inspections and preparing reports in accordance with NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) on a regular basis.
- Participate in local and national bridge inspections, develop inspection reports, and perform structural load rating calculations
- Work in a team environment and independently while challenging yourself to acquire knowledge and experience in engineering
- Support the bridge design group and other disciplines by applying structural engineering and detailing techniques in the development of structural designs
- Perform other duties as needed
- MS in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
- EIT or ability to obtain promptly.
- Minimum of 2 years’ bridge/structural inspection and design experience preferred.
- Completion of NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges training preferred.
- Willingness to work with other disciplines (bridge design, roadway design, hydraulic analysis, stream restoration, planning, traffic control) during inspection downtime.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for multiple night stays during the week.
- Physical ability to perform field inspections of in‑service bridge and culvert structures, tunnel structures, highway structures, overhead sign structures, hydraulic structures, and metal traffic signal poles. Physical demands include positioning extension ladders, maneuvering small boats, driving long distances, confined space, air travel, occasionally working at night, and walking long distances on uneven surfaces.
- Good communication skills and willingness to work in a multi‑disciplinary team environment.
- Exposure to environmental hazards such as warm and cold temperatures, water, work‑at‑height, poisonous plants, snakes, ticks, spiders, and other creatures.
- Active participation in our employee‑owned culture is a must.
- Proficiency in MS Office, MathCAD and AutoCAD, LARSA and Prestress Concrete Design.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and knowledge of engineering software packages such as LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB‑Multi Pier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, sp Column, STLBridgeLRFD, or STLBridge.
- Experience with Bently Open Bridge Modeler and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d.
- Strong understanding and hands‑on use of computers for structural layout and design.
- Good communication skills and willingness to work in a team environment.
