HDR is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our rapidly-growing Colorado building engineering team. This key role is part of our integrated Architecture/Engineering practice in Denver, Colorado, where you will influence projects from pursuit through final completion.
Responsibilities- Serve as Project Manager, Mechanical Engineer, or Engineer-of-Record on selected projects.
- Lead BIM design staff and junior engineers in project tasks.
- Assist Marketing and Business Development teams in developing fee proposals and scope of work documents for HVAC, plumbing, and industrial process equipment.
- Attend internal and external project coordination meetings.
- Design, select, coordinate, and layout HVAC and plumbing systems to meet architectural, engineering, and end‑user requirements.
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations.
- Develop control diagrams and sequences for building system operations.
- Produce technical reports and development of project specifications.
- Develop construction documents and modifications.
- Provide design support during construction, including field observations, submittal and shop drawing review, and RFI support.
- Conduct quality control and technical reviews, and provide guidance on active projects.
- Mentor and coach team members on relevant technical and professional areas.
- Collaborate with HDR Architecture and Engineering teams on project pursuits.
- Participate in discipline‑level and project‑level scope and fee development.
- Represent HDR at professional events to build the firm’s reputation.
- Assist in recruiting and hiring new team members.
- Engage in industry organizations, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Pursue additional industry certifications (e.g., LEED AP) and maintain them.
- Minimum 5 years of mechanical/plumbing engineering experience related to building design.
- Experience in Colorado across healthcare, water facilities, aerospace, aviation, hospitality, commercial real estate, or mission‑critical facilities.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, Revit, AutoCAD, and load‑analysis software such as IESVE.
- Experience with energy modeling and building energy use assessment.
- LEED or other sustainability accreditations.
- Technical and specification writing skills.
- Knowledge of current industry codes and standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Prior experience in mechanical system design for commercial or institutional buildings.
- Professional engineering license (PE or P.Eng) recognized by the local licensing board.
- Experience in commercial or institutional facilities, and use of MS Office, Trane TRACE, or similar software.
- Previous consulting experience with an architectural, engineering, or engineering‑consulting firm.
