DRMS Safety Trainer​/Tourist Mine Safety Inspector (Safety Specialist III

Job Title

The purpose of this position is to provide federally compliant mine safety and health training, safety assessment audits, training plan assistance, mine emergency risk assessments and general safety expertise and consulting to miners, contractors, owners, operators and those engaged in all types of mining activities; to train mine safety trainers to obtain necessary credentials to conduct their own federally compliant mine safety training and take ownership of their safety;

conduct training necessary to protect rescuers and increase the speed and success rate of victim rescue during mine emergencies; to inspect tourist mines for compliance with state regulations and state safety standards; to train and test mine officials to improve their safety awareness and hazard recognition skill levels and prevent accidents (for coal mine officials through the state certification process);

to design, organize and conduct effective mine rescue, MERD, and other mine emergency training for mine rescue teams; help to train and equip mine rescue teams in Colorado.

This work unit exists to prevent accidents and save lives, protecting those exposed to hazards in and around mines; implement mine safety training and education programs in collaboration with mine operators, miners, and county officials; to assist in complying with Mine Safety and Health Administration and state mine safety and health regulations; to assist in complying with Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives regulations regarding the safe use and storage of explosives;

to test and certify coal mine officials to conduct duties required by federal law; to inspect tourist mines and protect the public and tour mine operators from hazards that occur in their operations; to train and protect mine rescuers to prevent mine emergencies and respond quickly and effectively to a mine emergency when it occurs to saves lives and protect property.

Travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications Six (6) years of relevant experience within the mining, mine safety, safety training, occupational health and safety, health and safety risk management, environmental health, project management, or other health and safety field related to the work assigned to the position. OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university mining engineering, occupational health and safety, environmental health, natural science, environmental science, physical science, engineering, or a related science field.

AND Two (2) years of relevant experience within the mining, mine safety, safety training, occupational health and safety, health and safety risk management, environmental health, project management, or other health and safety field related to the work assigned to the position. Preferred Qualifications:

• Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
• The preferred candidate will have experience in mine safety training and inspections, mine rescue training and preparation of training documents.
• The preferred candidate will have excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with active, inactive, or abandoned mines.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• The ability to multi-task.
• The ability to work well with a diverse population.

Conditions of Employment:

• Colorado residency is required at the time of application.

• A current & valid Driver's license is required for operating a state vehicle and significant travel is anticipated.
