At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
Join our Luxembourg team where your expertise directly contributes to humanity's greatest adventure, while maintaining the work-life harmony that makes great engineering possible. Be part of a collaborative, inclusive culture where safety and technical excellence drive every decision as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight from the heart of Europe.
As part of a hardworking team of engineers and technicians, you will design and develop multi-layer insulation systems for the New Glenn Upper Stage, playing a critical role in ensuring the vehicle's thermal performance across the full range of launch and on-orbit environments. You will own MLI design from concept through production, working at the intersection of thermal analysis, materials, and manufacturing.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Design, develop, and iterate multi-layer insulation blankets and thermal control systems for New Glenn Upper Stage structures, propellant tanks, and fluid systems
- Work closely with thermal analysts to translate heat flux and temperature requirements into manufacturable MLI designs that meet mass and performance margins
- Define MLI material selections, layer counts, seaming patterns, attachment methods, and cutouts in coordination with structural and mechanical design teams
- Develop detailed drawings, fabrication specifications, and installation procedures for MLI blankets in collaboration with manufacturing and technicians
- Support testing and inspection activities including calorimeter testing, installation verification, and thermal vacuum testing to validate design performance
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in thermal or mechanical design of MLI or thermal control systems in an aerospace or space systems environment
- Working knowledge of spacecraft or launch vehicle thermal environments and insulation design principles
- Experience developing engineering drawings and specifications using CAD tools such as PTC Creo
- Familiarity with thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, SINDA, or equivalent
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with MLI fabrication, installation, and testing on flight hardware
- Familiarity with cryogenic insulation challenges, including propellant tank blanket design for liquid oxygen or liquid hydrogen systems
- Experience working with specialty MLI materials such as aluminized Kapton, Dacron netting, and low-out gassing adhesives
- Knowledge of contamination control and cleanroom requirements associated with MLI fabrication and installation
- Experience supporting design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR) and presenting thermal control design solutions to stakeholders
Base Pay Range for:
CO applicants is $90,934.00 - $ WA applicants is $99,201.00 - $ Other site ranges may differ
