Job Description

You’ll manage laboratory staff, oversee asphalt, soil, aggregate, and concrete testing programs, develop mix designs, maintain AMRL and CCRL accreditations, ensure quality and safety compliance, and provide technical support and client-focused solutions.

Core Responsibilities
  • The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for daily staff leadership and direction of laboratory testing services within the Lakewood office in accordance with established standards.
  • The role will involve developing asphalt, soil, aggregate, concrete testing schedules, mix designs, providing oversight and writing reports for clients.
  • The position requires communication with clients regarding their needs and the services provided.
  • This position will also require troubleshooting field and laboratory testing situations and equipment issues toward successful outcomes.
  • Determining personnel and equipment requirements based upon information provided by clients with input from the Area Manager, Project Managers, and the Quality Manager is anticipated.
  • Atlas maintains AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) accreditations.
  • The Laboratory Manager will work closely with staff to calibrate equipment and prepare for and maintain these accreditations on schedule.
  • Atlas values safety and quality. Ensuring staff follow safety measures including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is a top priority.
  • The Laboratory Manager is responsible for implementing the Quality Management System and providing feedback to the Area Manager and Quality Manager regarding deficiencies and areas requiring attention.
You’ll thrive here if you have
  • Minimum 5+ years of related experience or education in construction, construction materials testing, or geotechnical engineering fields
  • High school diploma
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological disciplines desirable (not required)
  • Minimum 5+ years staff management experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Teams
  • Understanding of construction materials testing processes and materials testing equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable codes, including ASTM, ACI, AASHTO and CDOT
  • In-depth technical knowledge of aggregate, concrete, soils and asphalt
  • Capable of reading, understanding and interpreting technical drawings, reports and additional information
  • Capable of lifting and carrying a maximum of 50 pounds daily
  • Proper use and training in accordance with Radioactive Materials Usage (this training can be provided upon hiring)
  • Effectively coordinate and schedule upwards of 10 laboratory staff
  • Clearly communicate expectations to staff (written and verbal)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the construction materials testing and geotechnical industry
  • Willingness to work with office leadership to develop scheduling strategies to meet project and client needs
  • Ability to prioritize project elements, client needs and resourcing on a daily basis
  • Willing to obtain LABCAT Level A, B, C and E Certification
