Controller, Finance & Banking, Accounting Manager

Soni’s client in the utility industry is seeking a Controller to lead accounting operations for a growing, multi-state organization. This role is responsible for financial reporting, internal controls, and project-based accounting, partnering closely with executive leadership and operations to support scalability and performance.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

• Lead all accounting functions, including general ledger, month-end/year-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Prepare and review GAAP-compliant monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Oversee revenue recognition and cost accounting for project-based and service contracts.
• Manage project accounting, including job costing, EAC, POC revenue recognition, margin analysis, and variance reporting.
• Design and maintain internal controls and support audit, tax, and regulatory requirements.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
• Drive process improvements and automation across ERP and financial systems.
• Partner with the CFO and executive team on budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance insights.
• Support growth initiatives, including new business lines and geographic expansion.

Requirements of the Controller:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with leadership responsibility.
• Strong GAAP knowledge; experience with ASC 606 and ASC 842.
• Background in project-based accounting within utilities, energy, construction, or infrastructure.
• Experience managing multi-entity environments and ERP systems.

Preferred Skills of the Controller:

• Experience in high-growth or operationally complex organizations.
• Strong cross-functional partnership skills.

Compensation: $235,000 to $285,000 base + 20% discretionary bonus

Compensation is based on experience, skills, and job-related qualifications.
