Controller (Strategic Finance Leader)

Denver, CO (Hybrid)
$125,000 – $155,000 + Bonus | Full-Time

Step Into a High-Impact Leadership Role

Ready to take ownership of a finance function and shape how a growing business scales?

We’re looking for a hands-on Controller who thrives at the intersection of accounting leadership, systems innovation, and strategic partnership. This is an opportunity to build and modernize a finance function for a multi-entity, project-based business operating across multiple states — with direct visibility to executive leadership and meaningful influence on company direction.

If you enjoy rolling up your sleeves, improving processes, and using data to drive smarter decisions — this role was built for you.

What You’ll Do as the Controller Own Financial Operations & Strategy
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across multiple entities with accuracy and consistency
  • Deliver clear, actionable financial reporting (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, KPIs, variance analysis)
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Act as a trusted advisor to executive and operational teams
Drive Project Accounting Excellence
  • Oversee percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting, including WIP schedules and revenue recognition
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure accurate cost tracking, forecasts, and margins
  • Strengthen processes around job costing, change orders, and project profitability
  • Ensure compliance with ASC 606 and industry standards
Lead & Scale a Multi-State Finance Function
  • Manage and mentor a team of accounting professionals across multiple locations
  • Standardize processes, policies, and reporting across entities
  • Travel periodically (approx. 10–12 times/year) to build alignment and relationships
Modernize Systems & Unlock Better Insights
  • Evaluate, select, and implement ERP and financial systems to support growth
  • Build Power BI dashboards and reporting tools that bring data to life
  • Leverage automation and AI to streamline workflows and improve efficiency
  • Integrate systems across finance, operations, and project management
Strengthen Controls & Compliance
  • Design and maintain internal controls and best practices
  • Serve as finance lead for banking and surety relationships
  • Oversee multi-state tax compliance and external audit coordination
  • Translate financial data into insights that drive smarter business decisions
What You Bring as a Controller Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting leadership (Controller or ready-now Assistant Controller)
  • Experience in multi-entity or multi-location environments
  • Strong expertise in POC accounting, WIP, and project-based financials
  • Proven success with ERP implementation or system upgrades
  • Proficiency in Power BI or similar reporting tools
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and ASC 606
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills — able to simplify financials for non-finance stakeholders
Bonus Points
  • CPA or CMA
  • Background in construction, engineering, manufacturing, or project-based industries
  • Experience integrating systems across ERP, CRM, and project management tools
  • Familiarity with surety bonding or credit facility reporting
  • Exposure to AI-driven finance tools or automation
Why This Controller Role Stands Out
  • High visibility & influence – report directly to the CEO and impact strategic decisions
  • Build & modernize – lead system improvements, automation, and reporting evolution
  • Growth-focused environment – help shape the future of a scaling business
  • Balanced leadership role – combine hands-on work with strategic oversight
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary: $125,000 – $155,000 (DOE)
  • Performance Bonus
  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) with discretionary match
  • Paid time off + holidays
