Job Summary

As a member of a small, collaborative team, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial management, investments, accounting, reporting, compliance and risk management. Reporting to the President & CEO, the CFO is the Foundation’s principal steward of financial resources and partners with the Board of Trustees to fulfill the Foundation’s fiduciary responsibilities, ensuring all assets are managed with integrity, transparency and a long-term perspective that advances both financial sustainability and supports the Foundation’s mission and values.

The CFO will work closely with the Investment Committee and external advisors to oversee the Foundation’s endowment and advance our commitment to values and mission-aligned investing, achieving strong relative risk-adjusted returns while ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s mission, vision and values.

Responsibilities

Financial Management:

Provide strategic leadership for all financial functions of the Foundation, including:

  • Financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and cash management
  • Accounting operations and financial reporting
  • Prepare financial and investment materials for board meetings
  • Tax compliance, including private foundation reporting requirements
  • Design and assessment of financial strategy and performance, managing the annual budget and long-term goals in support of the Foundation’s mission and objectives
  • Audit coordination and oversight
  • Internal controls and financial policies
  • Partner with the CEO and Board to provide thoughtful analysis and recommendations that support informed decision‑making
  • Support program officers in development of new programs and review of existing grants and programs and technical assistance to grantee organizations when requested

Impact and Mission-Aligned Investing

Primary staff support for the Foundation’s values and mission-aligned investing:

  • Support to the Investment Committee and Board of Trustees
  • Coordinate relationships with investment advisors and mission-aligned investments and identify and screen potential investments
  • Monitor portfolio performance, liquidity, and capital commitments
  • Support implementation and ongoing monitoring of Foundation’s mission-aligned investment strategy
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and practices
  • Ensure timely and accurate investment reporting and analysis

Risk Management

Partner with the CEO and Board to identify emerging risks and ensure the Foundation’s financial infrastructure supports operational efficiency, effectiveness and promotes compliance with laws and regulations.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing Private Foundations
  • Collaborate with legal counsel Board and CEO to address compliance issues
  • Ensure appropriate insurance coverage
  • Vendor and contract administration
  • Ensure corporate records and minutes are accurate and in compliance with relevant statutes and regulations
  • Uphold ethical standards in all financial decisions and activities

Operations and Administration

  • Supervise Finance and Programs Associate
  • General support of Foundation operations and administration
  • Support CEO in development of employee policies and compliance with appropriate laws
  • Compensation and benefits benchmarking
  • Manage relationship with PEO and benefit providers and manage annual contracting
  • Special projects as needed

Qualities we are looking for:

  • Financial acumen and an ability to explain financial issues and concepts and collaborate with grantees and programmatic colleagues that do not have finance backgrounds.
