Officers on patrol perform a variety of essential activities and services that are both initiative-taking and reactive in nature. Some of these include enforcing traffic and criminal laws, apprehending criminals, maintaining order, answering calls for service, conducting investigations, and educating the public regarding public safety issues and crime prevention, prepares written reports and field notes of investigations and patrol activities, apprehends criminals, and testifies in court.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interact tactfully, firmly, and courteously with the public to obtain information through effective interviews and interrogation.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper courses of action to be taken.
  • De-escalate situations utilizing verbal skills.
  • Use of equipment, firearms, and vehicles used in law enforcement work.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general Departmental periodicals, professional journals, policies and procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Respond to common inquiries from the public, citizens, regulatory, or law enforcement agencies.
  • Draft reports, and business correspondence.
  • Make custodial arrests where probable cause exists.
  • Enforce traffic laws.
  • Deter crime and assure community through high visibility policing.
  • Maintain law and order, protect members of the public and their properties, prevent crime and improve citizen’s quality of life.

    Job Qualifications:

    Education / Training, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s):

    Education:

    Must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified or certifiable. Diploma / GED

    Experience:

    Must be at least 21 years of age, Officers with at least three years of previous patrol experience are preferred. Applicants must have or be able to obtain a Colorado Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Laws and ordinances, modern investigation and interviewing techniques, crime scene processing procedures, First aid / CPR techniques. Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes and Criminal Procedure, Proficiency in the use of firearm(s), proficiency in driving skills and always adhering to Colorado Laws and department policies. Ethical and moral conduct both on and off duty are paramount. Ability to build effective working relationships.

    Sound judgement along with effective decision-making skills. Conflict resolution and critical thinking skills. Responsibility, Dependability, Honesy, Integrity.

    Additional:

    No Felony convictions.

    No convictions of misdemeanor crimes that would affect your ability to certify with the Colorado Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board. Visit the POST website at:
    Disqualifying Incidents | Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training for a list of misdemeanors that will preclude police officer certification. Traffic violations do not fall under these restrictions; however, you must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license by the date of hire.

    Equipment used:

    Duty belt containing a department policy approved semi-automatic duty pistol. Secondary or back up weapons also need to be approved, handcuffs, OC Spray, ASP Baton, and Taser. Additional such as less lethal shotgun, AR-15 may be carried following Certified class demonstrating proficiency.

    Environment:

    Not limited to police department, public, courts, department of revenue hearings, assisting other police departments.
