Description of JobThe Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) is the department’s lead surveillance, planning and response arm for public events including communicable disease outbreaks and epidemics, pandemics, bioterrorism, and other public health and mass casualty events and disasters. The division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response;
State Public Health Laboratory;
Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch;
Immunization Branch;
Electronic Disease Reporting, and Newcomer Health Program; and Operations Branch.
The Division exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events and disasters that impact the public’s health.
Work UnitThe purpose of the Communicable Disease Branch is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute including invasive bacterial diseases; foodborne/enteric diseases; waterborne diseases; viral respiratory diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; healthcare-associated infections; tuberculosis; and zoonotic/vector borne diseases.
What You Will Be DoingThis position exists to assist in performing surveillance for respiratory-associated hospitalizations (COVID-19, influenza, and RSV), which are reportable conditions in Colorado, by collecting medical, epidemiologic, and other data as well as managing health information. The position works closely with respiratory disease epidemiologists, other medical record abstractors, project/unit managers, and the Principal Investigator to determine priorities for data collection in order to meet changing and conflicting project objectives in a timely manner.
This position applies knowledge of each of the conditions being studied and of medical records organization, related databases, medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and medical information management procedures to assure comprehensive data collection and data quality. This position serves as a liaison between CDPHE and the staff at hospital medical records departments and other sources of data. The position serves as a resource to help with new surveillance officer training and case report form clarification.
This position also assists with data validation and cleaning to ensure completeness and correctness of data.
This position conducts enhanced case surveillance for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza-associated hospitalizations by conducting in-depth medical record reviews using standardized data collection forms to collect demographic, clinical, treatment, vaccination, and laboratory information.
