Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within the pediatric cardiovascular operating room. Under the supervision of the Circulating Registered Nurse, this team member is responsible for preparing the surgical suite, ensuring the sterility and functionality of instruments and equipment, and assisting the surgical team throughout complex cardiovascular procedures involving pediatric and adult congenital patients.

Key responsibilities include positioning and preparing patients, maintaining a sterile field, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and performing accurate instrument and sponge counts. The technologist ensures the safe and efficient operation of specialized cardiovascular equipment and contributes to a collaborative, age-appropriate, and family-centered surgical environment. All duties are performed in alignment with service excellence standards to promote optimal outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Your

responsibilities will include:
  • Organizes the cardiovascular operating suite with all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for scheduled procedures, ensuring readiness for both pediatric and adult congenital cases. Reviews daily surgical schedules and physician preference cards to ensure accurate stocking and efficient case preparation. Verifies the proper functioning and availability of all surgical instruments and specialized cardiovascular equipment prior to procedures. Establishes and maintains a sterile field with an orderly instrument table, adhering to strict aseptic technique.

    Prepares for emergency and add-on cases with urgency and precision, demonstrating adaptability in high-acuity situations. Transports patients to and from the surgical suite as needed, ensuring age-appropriate safety and comfort measures. Assists in the safe transfer, positioning, prepping, and draping of patients in accordance with hospital protocols and age-specific considerations. Performs and/or assists with the surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving process for self and surgical team members.

    Supports the surgeon intraoperatively by anticipating needs and passing instruments, sutures, sponges, medications, and other supplies efficiently and accurately. Assists with retraction, suctioning, and other intraoperative tasks as directed, maintaining focus on the operative field. Monitors patient condition and equipment during procedures, promptly identifying and reporting any issues requiring immediate attention. Handles surgical specimens with care, following hospital policy for labeling, documentation, and transport.

    Assists with the procurement, labeling, and handling of medications, IV fluids, and irrigation solutions in accordance with surgical services protocols. Operates and troubleshoots specialty cardiovascular equipment (e.g., heart-lung machine interfaces, cell savers, ECMO support) per manufacturer guidelines and institutional policy. Performs accurate sponge, sharp, and instrument counts before, during, and after procedures; immediately reports discrepancies to the circulating nurse or surgeon.

    Participates in efficient room turnover between cases, including cleaning, restocking, and setup/removal of equipment and instruments. Engages in patient and procedural verification processes to ensure surgical safety and compliance with national standards. Responds effectively to critical situations, including code blue, fire, and disaster scenarios, demonstrating calm and competence under pressure. Responds promptly to on-call responsibilities, arriving prepared to support urgent or emergent cardiovascular procedures.
