The purpose of the Communicable Disease Branch is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute including: invasive bacterial diseases; foodborne/enteric diseases; waterborne diseases; viral respiratory diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; healthcare-associated infections; tuberculosis; and zoonotic/vector borne diseases.

This position exists to assist in performing surveillance for respiratory-associated hospitalizations (COVID-19, influenza, and RSV), which are reportable conditions in Colorado, by collecting medical, epidemiologic, and other data as well as managing health information. The position works closely with respiratory disease epidemiologists, other medical record abstractors, project/unit managers, and the Principal Investigator to determine priorities for data collection in order to meet changing and conflicting project objectives in a timely manner.

This position applies knowledge of each of the conditions being studied and of medical records organization, related databases, medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and medical information management procedures to assure comprehensive data collection and data quality.
