Job Description

The Licensing and Acquisitions Librarian plays a vital role at the Auraria Library by serving as the library's expert on license agreements between vendors, publishers, and service providers. The position is responsible for overseeing the review, negotiation, and collection management of library resources subscribed or purchased in collaboration with the University of Colorado Libraries.

What You Will Do
  • Lead and manage library electronic resource license negotiation and management.
  • Review and negotiate all electronic resource licenses to secure favorable terms, including key issues such as accessibility, fair use, text and data mining, interlibrary loan, artificial intelligence, privacy, and more.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Collection Development and Strategies to initiate, assess, and negotiate transformative agreements.
  • Oversee the acquisition lifecycle of resources purchased collaboratively with the CU System Libraries.
  • Maintain productive relationships with vendors and publishers, managing library accounts and coordinating renewals, cancellations, and new purchases.
  • Organize and maintain license records and compliance documentation.
  • Advise library colleagues on license agreement interpretation and permissions, such as TDM and AI.
  • Actively negotiate with vendors and publishers for cost savings and better pricing.
  • Incorporate accessibility considerations into the negotiation and renewal process, reviewing VPATs, updating license language, and conducting accessibility audits.
  • Support direct subscriptions and purchases as needed.
  • Review all CU multi‑campus license agreements and coordinate with other CU campuses.
  • Serve on the CU System Electronic Resources Team to leverage purchasing power for favorable pricing and terms.
  • Develop and maintain guidelines and best practices for licensing terms.
  • Act as primary liaison to the University Procurement Services Center and University Risk and Compliance for E‑Resources licensing and IT security reviews.
Other Responsibilities
  • Present data and statistics for decision‑making.
  • Participate in the E‑Resources Support Committee, troubleshooting user access issues and Resolving database downtime.
  • Serve on campus‑wide committees and CU Denver faculty governance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Two (2) years of experience reviewing and negotiating license agreements in an academic library.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of experience reviewing and negotiating license agreements in an academic library.
  • Experience negotiating favorable accessibility or data privacy terms into library licenses that meet diverse user needs.
  • Experience troubleshooting E‑Resources access problems and using library software such as EZproxy.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of best practices and preferred license terms for academic libraries, copyright, fair use, and open access.
  • Experience preparing for and executing successful negotiations with cost savings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Time‑management and prioritization skills.
  • Experience with library management systems such as Sierra and Alma and managing electronic resources.
Conditions of Employment
  • Hybrid work structure with possibility of remote or office work; hours generally 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
