This contract AWS Fin Ops Engineer role focuses on improving cost visibility, governance, and optimization across AWS using data-driven analysis and stakeholder-ready recommendations. Success in this role means quickly identifying spend drivers and anomalies, turning cost data into clear actions, and helping teams adopt practical cost allocation and tagging practices. You will work primarily through analysis, reporting, and governance enablement rather than software development or SRE/Dev Ops execution.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and analyze AWS spend and usage across compute, storage, networking, managed services, and data transfer to identify trends, anomalies, and optimization opportunities.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on cost drivers and usage changes using AWS cost data, and document findings with clear next steps for accountable teams.
  • Build and maintain cost dashboards and recurring cost reports that translate raw spend data into actionable insights for engineering, platform, and business stakeholders.
  • Develop stakeholder-ready recommendations that balance savings with reliability and performance expectations, and track outcomes over time.
  • Support cost visibility and allocation by improving how spend is attributed to services, environments, and teams through consistent reporting structures.
  • Partner with service owners to investigate cost anomalies and drive remediation to closure, including validating impact after changes are implemented.
  • Contribute to ongoing process improvements that reduce manual overhead in cost reporting and approvals through better tooling, queries, and repeatable reporting workflows.
Required Skills
  • Strong understanding of AWS services and how they drive enterprise spend, including compute, storage, networking, managed services, and data transfer.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS cost tooling, including AWS Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), and Athena (or an equivalent query/analytics approach).
  • Strong analytical skills, including SQL/data analysis, with the ability to translate complex cost and usage data into practical, stakeholder-ready recommendations.
  • Experience monitoring and analyzing AWS spend and usage and performing root‑cause analysis of spend drivers and cost anomalies using AWS cost data.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with Fin Ops platforms such as Cloudability/Apptio, Harness/Turbot, Turbonomic, Kubecost, or similar tools.
  • Experience supporting multi‑account AWS environments, including AWS Organizations and account structure considerations for governance and reporting.
  • AWS certification such as Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect.
  • 2+ years of experience in cloud cost management, Fin Ops, or a closely related role.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and drive adoption of governance practices such as tagging standards and cost allocation.
  • Experience building and maintaining cost dashboards, cost allocation/tagging reports, and executive‑ready summaries.
  • Experience establishing and continuously improving tagging standards and cost allocation governance, including closing tagging gaps with service owners.
  • Experience supporting showback/chargeback by mapping cloud spend to services, teams, and initiatives.
  • Ability to recommend and support continuous cost optimization initiatives (rightsizing, autoscaling strategy refinements, Savings Plans/Reserved Instances strategy, storage lifecycle and database/storage optimization) while balancing reliability and performance expectations.
  • Experience supporting forecasting and budgeting through trend analysis, demand assumptions, and cost/impact trade‑off analysis for planning discussions.
  • Experience embedding cost governance guardrails into service provisioning/management practices and improving cost reporting processes to reduce manual overhead.
