Level 3 Machinist (Horizontal Boring Mill / Horizontal Machining Center)
Position Summary The Level 3 Machinist is an experienced precision manufacturing professional responsible for setting up, programming, and operating horizontal boring mills and/or horizontal machining centers to produce high-quality components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and production requirements. This position works with minimal supervision and serves as a technical resource for less experienced machinists.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Setup and operate horizontal boring mills and CNC horizontal machining centers
- Interpret blueprints, GD&T(ASME Y14.5-2018), work instructions, and technical specifications.
- Select tooling, fixtures, and work-holding methods to ensure efficient machining operations.
- Program, edit, and optimize CNC programs at the machine or through CAM generated code.
- Perform first-piece inspections and verify dimensional accuracy using precision measuring equipment.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and quality issues to minimize downtime.
- Perform complex machining operations involving tight tolerances and critical dimensions.
- Monitor tool wear and make offset adjustments as required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5+ years of CNC machining experience, including horizontal machining centers or horizontal boring mills.
- Strong understanding of machining principles, feeds, speeds, tooling, and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2018
- Experience using precision measuring instruments including:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Bore gauges
- Dial indicators
- Height gauges
- Ability to independently setup and prove out new jobs.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Journeyman Machinist certification or vocational training.
- Experience with Fanuc or similar controls.
- CAM programming experience in Mastercam.
- Experience machining large weldments, castings, or aerospace/industrial components.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently lift up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to safely operate cranes, hoists, and material-handling equipment.
