Executive Director

Colorado Public Health Association

Statewide

Organization type:
Nonprofit

Type of role:
Full-time

Job Category:
Executive

Salary: $90,000 - $115,000

Are you a mission-driven leader who builds trust, drives revenue, and knows how to bring a volunteer-led organization to its next level? The Colorado Public Health Association (CPHA) is searching for its first full-time Executive Director – a strategic, relationship-centered leader ready to stabilize and grow one of Colorado's most respected public health associations.

CPHA advances the health of all Coloradans through advocacy, professional development, community building, and our annual flagship conference, Public Health in the Rockies (PHiR). We are at an inflection point, and we're looking for someone who sees that as an opportunity, not a challenge.

About the role This is a high-autonomy role spanning the full breadth of association leadership. At an executive level, you will:

  • Own membership growth and sustainability. Membership strategy is the board's unanimous #1 priority. You will set the direction, drive retention and recruitment, and make CPHA membership indispensable across every stage of a public health career in Colorado.
  • Lead fund development. From grant writing to sponsor ships to individual donors, you will build the financial foundation CPHA needs to sustain and grow its work — with long-term sustainability as the goal, not just this year's budget.
  • Be the board's strategic partner. You will keep our all-volunteer board proactively informed, supported, and equipped to govern well – with clear reporting, minimal surprises, and a genuine partnership orientation.
  • Oversee a full program calendar. Provide strategic oversight of the annual conference (PHiR) and events such as the Health Equity Series, Culture of Data conference, Day at the Capitol and more – working with a part-time programs contractor and volunteer committees to deliver quality programming year-round.
  • Build and hold Colorado public health relationships. Serve as CPHA's primary external spokesperson – cultivating partnerships, representing the organization at public forums, and leveraging existing relationships across the state's public health community.
  • Coordinate policy advocacy. Support our Policy Committee and contracted lobbyist, communicate legislative priorities clearly to members, and bring a health equity lens to CPHA's policy positions

What CPHA is looking for

  • A strategic planner and executor – you don't just build plans, you deliver on them, and you can guide an organization through a transition moment with steadiness and clarity
  • A communicator others trust – transparent with boards, engaging with members and the public, and skilled at keeping diverse stakeholders in the loop before problems arise
  • A fundraiser with range – grant writing, membership strategy, sponsor ships, donor cultivation. You understand that revenue sustainability requires multiple streams and a long-term view
  • Rooted in Colorado's public health community – or deeply motivated to be. Existing relationships are a strong asset; the ability to build them quickly is a must
  • Genuinely committed to anti-racism and health equity – not as a line on a resume, but as a practice. You can point to specific decisions you made, systems you changed, and communities you centered

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5-7+ years of progressive nonprofit or association leadership experience
  • Demonstrated success in membership development, fundraising, or revenue growth
  • Experience supporting a volunteer board
  • Strong organizational management skills
  • Excellent communicator
  • Commitment to equity as a leadership practice.
  • Must reside in Colorado; local travel is required.

Preferred:

  • Existing Colorado public health community relationships
  • Experience with member-based associations or AMS platforms
  • Background in policy advocacy
  • Degree in public health, nonprofit management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Flexibility:

The board is open to candidates from adjacent fields who bring exceptional transferable leadership – particularly in fundraising, organizational management, and board relations.
