Community Assistant Position
Spur's health education and lifelong food solutions (SHELFS) program at CSU Spur involves multiple aspects of public health advocacy and community engagement with the goals of reducing chronic disease burden, namely type 2 diabetes and related cardio-metabolic diseases. SHELFS will launch a community randomized controlled cross over study involving a variety of public health focused activities. This community assistant position will work alongside Dr.
Ryan and CSU students to recruit households/families from the GES neighborhoods, and be engaged in the program on a weekly basis. The individual will assist families in cooking workshops, outdoor recreation, and general environmental public health education initiatives. This individual will also learn research protocols and be involved in generating SHELFS materials for the community and with CSU Extension staff.
There will be activities during evening hours and these may occur both on and off Spur campus. Having access to personal transportation is recommended and preferred.
The job duties may include, but not limited to, meeting with families at community events and talking about SHELFS, active participating and helping to lead SHELFS events twice a week for 15 weeks at CSU Spur and in the local venues (e.g. Focus Points, Tepeyac health center etc), bringing ideas and being a community advocate for the program schedule and activities, learning about research and public health program development, and being organized and sending reminders to SHELFS participants.
High School degree, GES Community engagement experience, examples of local public health advocacy. Preferred: college degree, certifications, community organizing experience in GES (80216 zip code). Globeville, Elyria, Swansea community residents interested in improving public health and reducing disease burden via education in the community.
