Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a 24 hour behavioral health acute care facility intended to provide a safe, secure, and therapeutic setting for patients with both psychiatric and medical issues. Services include evaluation and treatment for patients who are severely mentally ill, with the goal of returning patients to their optimal level of functioning and reintegration into the community where appropriate.
UnitABTU unit provides treatment for adolescents ages 12 through 17. Patients have psychiatric disorders with concurrent criminal involvement or are highly dangerous, requiring inpatient care in a secure setting. This is a medium acuity unit with acute symptoms of mental illness, involving primary psychiatric diagnoses and complex needs. The unit is located in Hawkins and is considered high security specialty.

The purpose of this position is to provide nursing oversight and direction of nursing personnel on the same shift and unit. Provide direction to all direct care nursing staff on assigned shift(s). Serve as a resource and mentor to nursing staff on the assigned shift. Promote and maintain nursing staff efficiency. Oversee attainment of Unit/Program/Hospital/Nursing Department goals for the specified shift.
Primary duties include providing directions to nursing staff for the shift and providing therapeutic nursing care to mentally ill patients. Represent the Nursing Department in hospital-wide committees and work groups. Apply knowledge and experience to provide safe and effective patient care. Provide immediate crisis intervention in the milieu and response to all emergency situations.
This position is responsible for assisting nursing staff with clinical direction of nursing staff, QA/PI activities and ensuring compliance in all areas and through interdisciplinary collaboration. This position is accountable to the Lead Nurse/Nurse III/Nurse II. This full-time role facilitates groups and ensures nursing standards of care are implemented throughout all phases of the nursing process and delivery of services. The Nurse I works in tandem with other staff on the unit, and operates within multiple levels of patient care across a continuum.
The Nurse I adheres to professional codes of conduct, regulatory agency standards, the Nurse Practice Act, State Board of Nursing, and applicable ethics and scope guidance. The Nurse I communicates, implements, and clarifies nursing policies at the unit level and collaborates with the Lead Nurse to prepare for onsite surveys, documentation requirements, and quality of care per governing standards.
- Clinical Direction: Directs all nursing staff on the assigned shift and unit in conjunction with the Lead Nurse; assists with staffing decisions based on acuity and coverage; ensures services align with CMHIP policies and standards.
- Ensure nursing assignments and duties are completed per policies and that changes are communicated to staff and leadership.
- Act as charge nurse for the shift and communicate safety concerns and staffing needs to the Lead Nurse.
- Coordinate with other disciplines and leadership to implement nursing directives and ensure unit operations meet standards.
- Department Standards: Maintain nursing standards of care, adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHIP Ethics, stay current with policies and literature, and communicate changes to subordinates.
