Job Summary and QualificationsThe Vascular Access Team (VAT) RN applies advanced knowledge of the vascular system, vascular access devices (VADs), and VAD insertion techniques to establish intravenous access for pediatric and adult patients.
Responsibilities- Critically assess each patient’s medical history, present health status, and proposed course of treatment to ensure the appropriate VAD is selected.
- Work collaboratively with ordering providers to clarify vascular access needs when selection questions arise.
- Perform a physical examination of the insertion site prior to VAD placement.
- Utilize expert-level vascular ultrasound/sonography skills and aseptic or sterile techniques to insert VADs at the bedside or in procedural areas.
- Monitor the patient’s electrocardiograph readings during the insertion of advanced lines (e.g., PICCs) for signs of device malposition or procedure intolerance.
- Select the appropriate method of imaging to verify tip placement, interpret imaging results in compliance with the VAT RN scope of practice, and issue nursing orders for line use.
- Provide consultation services for malfunctioning VADs and offer VAD use and maintenance education to staff and patients.
- Document all insertion and troubleshooting activities per the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Enter charges in the hospital’s documentation system to ensure appropriate billing of devices and VAT procedures.
- Maintain VAD-related core measures affecting quality, patient safety, and reimbursement, including CLABSIs; collaborate with Infection Prevention for event analysis and corrective actions when necessary.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Current licensure in the State of Colorado as a Registered Nurse and BLS – Healthcare provider certification are required. ACLS and PALS within 3 months of hire. - Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred. - Experience:
Two years bedside clinical RN experience is required. Two years VAT RN experience is preferred. - Special
Qualifications:
Demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and other health care team members; experience with ultrasound is preferred; must demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound guided vascular access techniques within 6 months of hire; must complete VAD insertion competencies per organization policies and procedures prior to inserting devices independently or without a VAT RN preceptor.
