Overview

This is a temporary position (9 months or less) with pay starting at $18.00 per hour. Employment starts 04/01/2026 and ends 11/01/2026. The mission of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources is to develop, preserve, and enhance the state's natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future citizens and visitors. Responsibilities

Seasonal Park Rangers educate the public and patrol State Parks. Most work is outdoors in varied seasons and weather. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrol park areas by vehicle or on foot
  • Respond to emergencies and resolve visitor complaints
  • Enforce park rules and issue citations for violations
  • Complete reports and may be required to appear in court
  • Revenue collection, verification, accounting and deposits
  • Answer questions about park trails, wildlife, plants, geology, history, and culture
  • Educate visitors and assist with environmental and interpretive programs
  • Assist with daily park operations, trail maintenance, facility maintenance, repair, and cleanliness

Work is up to 40 hours per week and up to nine months in duration. School schedules may be accommodated. A comprehensive background check is required and must be passed.

Basic Requirements
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license for operating a state vehicle and an acceptable driving record (will be verified through the background check)
  • Federal law prohibits illegal drugs; if you have used marijuana in the past 12 months or any illegal drugs in the past 36 months, you will be disqualified
  • Felony or domestic violence convictions, or misdemeanors conflicting with POST certification for Colorado Peace Officer standards, will disqualify you (see Colorado POST decertification resources). Successful completion of a comprehensive background check is required
  • Must be available to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays; may involve inclement weather
  • Outdoor physical work requiring climbing in/out of vessels/vehicles and/or under trailers
  • Uniform items may be provided; some items may need to be purchased at employee expense
  • Must attend and complete required Colorado State Park training (may include exposure to OC spray)
  • Must have or be able to obtain valid First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and in a team; strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, Google Apps)
  • Preference for applicants with or pursuing a Natural Resources degree or related field
  • Previous experience handling money and working with the public is preferred
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly during a workday
Physical Requirements
  • Climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials; ability to perceive color differences and hear radio/ verbal communications

Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, workers who drive a State-owned vehicle must maintain a safe driving record and valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

To comply with the fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be reviewed for workers who:

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
  • Operate a vehicle as part of the position
  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
