Clinical & Surgical Instructor – Shelter Medicine | Humane Colorado
Humane Colorado is seeking an experienced Clinical & Surgical Instructor (DVM) Veterinarian to lead and grow our veterinary externship program while delivering high-quality medical and surgical care in a dynamic shelter and community medicine setting. This unique role is focused on hands‑on teaching and mentorship of veterinary students in high-volume surgery (HQHVSN) and shelter medicine.

Purpose of PositionHumane Colorado's clinical and surgical instructor cultivates learning opportunities for externs in shelter and community medicine, providing overall management and coordination of the program while serving as the primary instructor for shelter medicine and consulting with instructors for community medicine. This is also an adjunct faculty position with Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Responsibilities- Manage the veterinary externship program, including active instruction, grading, evaluation, and coordination.
- Directly supervise, coach and mentor veterinary externs on a day‑to‑day basis, specifically in their provision of veterinary medicine.
- Develop and adapt the curriculum as best suited for the organization and the externs.
- Receive training from CSU veterinary school faculty intermittently thereafter, to ensure a quality and consistent extern experience.
- Support shelter and community medicine veterinarians in their interactions with and instruction to the veterinary externs to ensure a smooth, effective program for the organization and experience for the externs.
- Serve as a liaison between potential externs, veterinary schools, and the organization.
- Serve as lead advocate and voice for externs within veterinary services.
- Provide outstanding diagnostic, clinical, and surgical care for the shelter animals in the shelter practice.
- Develop a deep understanding of incremental care as it pertains to access to veterinary care, and how it is applied to patients seeking medical care at the Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur.
- Perform and teach surgical procedures on a regular basis with an emphasis on HQHVSN. Dentistry, various soft tissue and orthopedic procedures may also be included.
- Be familiar with and rotate through the different areas of veterinary practice in Shelter Veterinary Services
- Effectively and compassionately communicate with staff, students, owners of pets and the community.
- Work with other departments to coordinate care and quarantine of infectious disease animals effectively and efficiently.
- Cultivate a culture of collaboration, teamwork and learning within veterinary services and throughout the organization.
- Work in collaboration with the Philanthropy team to support fundraising efforts and campaigns, such as providing impact stories and reports.
- Participate in donor events, meetings, and tours.
- Serve as a veterinary ambassador with community partners, promoting the organization's mission, goals and strategic initiatives including Socially Conscious Sheltering and Animal Communities to veterinarians, vendors, the public, and other animal welfare related organizations.
