Laboratory and Scientific Director

State public health laboratories are foundational to protecting the health of the population. The Colorado Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) conducts about 3 million tests annually, working closely with federal agencies and local public health agencies to identify and control infectious diseases, environmental contaminants, and other public health threats.

• Lead and oversee laboratory operations, staff, and an annual $45 million budget.
• Ensure quality assurance, environmental health & safety, and compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Manage human resources, including staffing, development, and performance.
• Drive laboratory modernization, process improvement, and change management.
• Lead legislative and regulatory initiatives, public affairs, and emergency preparedness.
• Coordinate logistics for laboratory operations.

• MD, DO, or DPM with pathology board certification; OR 2+ years of experience directing high‑complexity tests and 20 CE credit hours in relevant laboratory practice.
• OR PhD (or equivalent) in a laboratory science, board‑certified by an HHS‑approved board, with 2 years directing and 2 years supervising high‑complexity testing and 20 CE credit hours in relevant laboratory practice.
• At least 2 years in an executive laboratory role, managing staff and a budget.

• Executive experience in a similarly sized laboratory.
• Experience implementing quality assurance systems and ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Excellent performance‑management skills.
• Dynamic leadership abilities and a record of producing results.

• Background and financial checks required.
• Travel may be required; potential overnight stays 1–2 times per year.
• Colorado driver’s license required.
• On‑call for public health emergencies.
• Critical services designation – may work during delayed start, early release, or closure situations.
