Job Title:

Asphalt Quality Control Technician III Job Description

This role supports asphalt production and paving operations across the Denver metro area by performing advanced quality control testing, inspections, and field observations on asphalt and aggregate materials. The Asphalt Quality Control Technician III ensures materials meet project specifications and industry standards, working independently in both laboratory and field environments. The position requires strong experience in asphalt quality control, relevant CDOT certifications, and the ability to collaborate effectively with plant personnel, field crews, and leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive quality control testing on hot mix asphalt, aggregates, and field density to verify material performance and compliance.

  • Conduct inspections and sampling of asphalt and aggregate materials to ensure adherence to project specifications and applicable standards.

  • Execute accurate testing procedures, perform precise calculations, and complete thorough documentation of all test results.

  • Communicate testing outcomes clearly and promptly to leadership, plant personnel, and field crews to support timely decision-making.

  • Perform nuclear density gauge testing and work closely with paving crews to achieve required compaction levels and quality targets.

  • Complete asphalt coring and patching activities in the field, ensuring proper sampling and restoration of test locations.

  • Calibrate, verify, and maintain laboratory testing equipment to ensure reliable and accurate test results.

  • Participate in laboratory accreditation events and proficiency testing to support ongoing compliance and quality improvement.

  • Maintain detailed daily reports of field observations, test results, and any deviations from specifications.

  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and training support to junior technicians to help develop their skills and ensure consistent testing practices.

  • Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards in both field and laboratory settings to maintain a safe and orderly work environment.

Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of asphalt quality control experience, including both laboratory and field testing.

  • Current CDOT QC/QA certifications with CAPA Levels A, B, and C; candidates with CAPA Levels A and B may be considered.

  • Strong understanding of asphalt quality control practices and CDOT specifications.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday in varying field and plant conditions.

  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, shovel, and sweep as part of testing and inspection activities.

  • Capability to regularly lift and carry up to 50–60 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Ability to push and pull equipment and materials as needed to perform testing and sampling.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing, calculations, and documentation.

  • Effective communication skills to relay test results and observations to various stakeholders.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working independently in both laboratory and field environments.

  • Familiarity with nuclear density gauge operation and safety procedures.

  • Experience supporting paving crews to achieve compaction and quality requirements.

  • Ability to provide training and guidance to less experienced technicians.

  • Comfort working extended hours during peak season, including some nights and weekends, in alignment with asphalt production schedules.
