Armed Campus Safety & Security Officer

Full-time, 12-month, non-exempt position reporting directly to the Director of Security. Campus Security Officers are responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across Colorado Academy’s 94-acre campus. This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to the regular responsibility for carrying a firearm and making time-sensitive decisions that directly impact campus safety.

Full-time, 12-month non-exempt position that reports directly to the Director of Risk Management. Safety & Security staff are responsible for patrolling the 94-acre campus and monitoring all activity. This 12-month full-time position is for the second shift from 11:30 am through 8:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Armed Security Officer provides a visible and responsive security presence on campus, while ensuring a safe environment through patrols, access control, and emergency response.

The successful individual must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team providing consistent safety and security support to students, staff, parents and visitors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Patrol buildings, campus grounds, and parking lots on foot and in a vehicle to observe unusual behavior and deter illegal activity through physical presence.
• Observe the activities of persons in and around campus buildings including monitoring security systems such as cameras and alarms.
• Able to work independently and proactively assess problem situations while exercising tact and judgment in bringing about their resolution.
• Assist with Emergency Planning and execute emergency response plans if needed.
• Document all credible campus incidents in the Colorado Academy incident management database.
• Enforce parking and driving rules of Colorado Academy.
• Work cooperatively, courteously, and professionally with all segments of the Colorado Academy community as well as outside visitors with an authorized purpose.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Participate in paid training opportunities as requested, including quarterly firearm qualifications.
• Work successfully with security team members to achieve department goals.
• Voluntary overtime opportunities may be occasionally offered.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent desired.
• This is an armed role requiring a minimum of 4 years of prior experience in law enforcement. Security experience or education cannot substitute for the required police background.
• A valid P.O.S.T. certification, HR218 authorization, or CCW is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and motor vehicle record must meet established standards.
• The applicant must be able to pass a background check, drug screening, and psychological exam, all provided and paid for by Colorado Academy.
• The applicant must successfully complete a 90‑day probationary period.
• The applicant must provide their own 9mm semi‑automatic handgun.
• A handgun qualification and safe firearm handling test will be administered by Colorado Academy which the candidate must pass with a minimum 80% score before the end of their probationary period.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Comfortable with radio communication and public speaking.
• Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Must have First Aid certification within 90 days of hire date.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
• Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements year‑round.
• Ability to walk for long distances.
