Position: CDOC Correctional Officer I - Buena Vista

This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC)

Posting to fill vacant positions at our Buena Vista location. The Buena Vista Correctional Complex consists of two facilities: the Buena Vista Correctional Facility and the Buena Vista Minimum Center.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
  • Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
  • Monitor visiting areas
  • Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts
  • Cross-check and maintain movement logs
  • Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches)
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards
  • Inspect inmate mail and property
  • Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes
  • Follow established tool and key control, ensure proper storage and documentation
  • Attend roll call
  • Document incidents using established reporting practices
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
  • Work additional hours and/or shifts as required to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or a GED certificate
Conditions of Employment
  • Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Employment within the application process
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; H-1B sponsorship is not available
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record
  • Have no felony convictions and comply with all related statutory requirements
  • Successful background investigation is required; provide written disposition of any charges if applicable
  • All job offers are contingent upon a successful health screening by a healthcare professional
  • Must successfully complete all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including written and practical exams in Defensive Tactics
  • Possess the physical ability to pass Defensive Tactics, including lifting, striking, and executing controlled takedowns
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment
  • Must be willing and able to work all shifts, doubles, weekends, holidays, in inclement weather, and in a locked correctional environment
  • Must be willing and able to use physical force as trained, including firearm use
  • Must be willing and able to travel and/or transport inmates in state vehicles
  • Tuberculosis screening is required of all new employees
