Position: CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER

Position Summary

The Campus Safety Officer position is assigned to Patrol Operations within Campus Safety. Campus Safety Officers are the primary safety and security personnel for the University. Their duties include, but are not limited to, patrol of the campus and its buildings and assisting the campus community with a wide variety of problems and concerns. We will be filling multiple positions from this posting.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas, physically inspecting buildings and checking doors, windows, entries and exits for safety.
  • Respond to fire alarms.
  • Communicate with and assist fire, police divisions and other public safety entities.
  • Provide initial response to emergencies and criminal incidents on University property; complete initial investigations to determine disposition.
  • Provide general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehend violators of city, state and federal laws and regulations that may have occurred on or involved university property.
  • Operate university patrol vehicles and radio equipment as assigned.
  • Complete written reports and maintain logs relating to activity on campus.
  • Serve as Division dispatcher, handling incoming calls for service, monitoring fire and intrusion alarms, dispatching other officers to calls, and monitoring CCTV systems.
  • Adhere to all Division and University policies, procedures, directives, rules and regulations.
  • Participate in the interview panel during the Division’s selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
  • Participate in the Division’s recruitment and accreditation efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills, basic computer and typing proficiency.

  • Accept and successfully complete specialized training.
  • Have thorough knowledge of simple set‑up, adjustment and operational procedures of work‑related equipment.
  • Facilitate the interactions of diverse needs of a complex organization.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and be insurable under University guidelines; or obtain a valid Colorado driver’s license within the required time frame.
  • Successfully pass a written job‑related skills examination.
  • Pass a complete background check, including criminal, motor vehicle report, and verification of employment and education.
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical, drug screen and human performance evaluation administered by a University approved physician.
Employment Requirements Post Hire
  • Obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within 3 weeks of hire.
  • Complete initial certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic within 3 weeks of hire.
  • Maintain re‑certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and TPR to ensure job‑related skills are current.
  • Complete an annual physical assessment test as part of TPR re‑certification to ensure physical fitness.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science or Security Management; or 6+ months related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Activities

All DCS personnel required to hold a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License must successfully pass a job‑related human performance evaluation. The evaluation, administered by an approved University of Denver medical provider, includes tests such as carrying traffic cones (10 lb), fire extinguishers (15 lb) 1× in 5 min, traffic barricades (27 lb), opening and closing parking lot gates (15 lb) 1× in 5 min, dragging incapacitated persons (65 lb) 1× in 5 min, climbing stairs (60 steps in
