Description

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical equipment and systems used in wastewater treatment and collection facilities. Ensures all mechanical assets and related equipment are properly maintained to support continuous and efficient plant operations. Schedules and directs the work of maintenance staff, ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations, maintains maintenance records, and reports to the Senior Mechanical Maintenance Manager.

Examples

of Duties
  • Plan, supervise, schedule, direct, and evaluate the work of mechanical maintenance personnel using a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Review, develop, and recommend changes to mechanical preventive, corrective maintenance, and lubrication programs; evaluate new equipment.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders on mechanical maintenance projects and activities; coordinate equipment removal and installation with contractors and Metro departments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert regarding mechanical maintenance work; provide training and mentorship.
  • Recommend and assist with updates to blueprints, schematics, and equipment O&M manuals.
  • Advise management of critical and continuing maintenance problems and submit regular reports.
  • Participate in employee selection, performance evaluation, counseling, and discipline as necessary; supervise performance appraisal processes.
  • Maintain and promote a safe working environment; ensure employees complete required training and certifications.
  • Manage requisition of parts and supplies and assist in developing recommended inventory levels.
  • Review and recommend revisions to the Mechanical Apprentices curriculum; ensure staff complete curriculum and required training.
  • Work with Strategy and Communication in implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in the Mechanical Maintenance on‑call program.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Qualifications Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
    • Extensive knowledge of industrial mechanical systems used in wastewater treatment (pumps, valves, piping, rotating equipment).
    • Preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance methods.
    • Reliability‑centered maintenance techniques.
    • Understanding of mechanical drawings, schematics, and O&M manuals.
    • Industrial safety practices, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and general industrial safety requirements.
    Skilled at
    • Good verbal and written communication.
    • Process improvement.
    • Training and mentoring apprentices and staff in maintenance practices.
    • Project management including work planning, resource allocation, and progress reviews.
    • Acting as a subject matter expert in various mechanical trades.
    • Installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems.
    • Demonstrating qualified mechanical safety procedures.
    • Managing conflicts and negotiating solutions.
    • Utilizing a CMMS for maintenance tasks.
    • Active and empathic listening skills.
    Ability to
    • Organize and coordinate work assignments and documentation.
    • Recommend updates to drawings and schematics.
    • Follow procurement procedures for parts and inventory.
    • Implement and enforce policies and procedures fairly.
    • Work a flexible schedule to cover supervision of staff.
    • Participate in the on‑call program.
    • Coordinate with other Metro divisions.
    • Effectively supervise staff.
    Education, License, and Certifications
    • High School diploma or GED.
    • Completion of a four‑year apprenticeship or an academic degree/trade school certification in a related field.
    • SMRP Certified Maintenance Reliability Technician (CMRT).
    Working Conditions

    Wet/humidity conditions; exposure to wastewater, chemicals, vibration, confined spaces, and work loyees will work in indoor and outdoor environments year‑round in all weather conditions. Physical demands include lifting up to 75 lbs and frequent walking, climbing ladders, and operating controls.
