Job Overview
Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire an Automotive & Heavy Equipment Technician III
. The Automotive & Heavy Equipment Technician III is the lead/specialist level classification in the equipment technician series. This position performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and road maintenance equipment.

- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gas, hybrid, gasoline and diesel engines and major drivetrain components.
- Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions, cooling, fuel, electrical, CAN data bus, heating and air conditioning, air and hydraulic systems.
- Performs major and minor tune‑ups using manufacturer technical information.
- Performs annual heavy diesel emissions test and DOT inspections in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Performs general and specialized metal fabrication and welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum using gas torch, ARC, MIG, and TIG welders.
- Diagnoses and solves complex, non‑routine, and remote maintenance and repair problems.
- Maintains necessary records of all work performed using a computerized fleet management system.
- Assists with training of less experienced employees and directs work of others, as required.
- Operates equipment such as cars, trucks, snow plows, graders, dozers, loaders, and semi‑trucks for testing, repair and delivery purposes in compliance with DOT regulations.
- Performs related work, as required.
- May be reassigned during emergency situations.
- Education & Experience: Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent AND at least four years of experience in repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and mechanized automotive equipment.
- Tools: Must possess hand tools necessary to perform Mechanic III duties.
- Driver's License: Class A or Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with manual transmission endorsement or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire; valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Special Requirements: Pass a pre‑employment physical and drug test; possess hand tools; state of Colorado diesel opacity inspector certification within 12 months of hire; mobile air climate systems EPA 609 certification within 12 months of hire; DOT inspector certification within 12 months of hire.
- Background Check: Job offer contingent on passing a background investigation with fingerprinting.
- Class A or Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with manual transmission endorsement.
- Colorado diesel opacity inspector certification.
- Mobile air climate systems EPA 609 certification.
- DOT inspector certification.
- ASE certifications.
- Thorough knowledge of design, adjustment, operation, maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of standard practices, procedures, hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
- Skill in the use of mechanical tools, materials and testing equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical defects.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees.
- Must work in compliance with OSHA regulations and follow safety policies and procedures.
Back and upper body:
Constantly lift with one or two hands tools and parts weighing 1–30 lbs. from floor to waist; frequently lift tools and parts weighing 30–80 lbs. from floor to shoulder; occasionally lift parts weighing 50–70 lbs. from floor to shoulder, with co‑workers; occasional push and pull average 100 lb. force using various jacks and supporting devices.
