Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway in the Telecommunications Department as a Telecom Maintainer II. The position manages essential telecommunications systems that ensure safe and efficient train movements and communications.
This full‑time (40 hrs/week) role is 6 days a week, including one on‑call day subject to overtime, alternate shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments are governed by union agreement and typically based on seniority.
Travel requirements are 50% to 80%. Employees will travel to and remain at job sites for extended periods, sometimes for weeks, within the designated seniority region.
Company paid training includes on‑the‑job and classroom instruction, with travel to the BNSF Training Center.
Key responsibilities include:
- Installing, testing, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting communications equipment, including assembling and dismantling parts.
- Installing, testing, and maintaining fiber optics, cables, towers, antennas, power plants, and microwave/radio sites; terminating overhead/underground cabling and tower erection, rigging, installation, and maintenance, including climbing towers.
- Operating trucks and various equipment (tractors, trenchers, digging machines) for telecom work.
Work is conducted in a safety‑sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet); uneven surfaces; loud noises; fumes; and heavy or moving machinery.
Safety is a core value; employees must adhere to safety rules, policies, and federal and state regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment and responding to emergencies.
Relocation assistance is not available. There is a 120‑day probationary period and 120 days to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.

Salary Range: Approx. $9,110.30/month, average annual $109,323
- Able to work now and in the future without BNSF assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization.
- 21 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Able to work safely in the specified working conditions.
- Able to work the specified shifts and hours.
- Able to meet travel requirements.
- Able to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 240 days.
- Able to visually distinguish colors and identify verbal/non‑verbal signals.
- Able to use hand tools for applications requiring holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
- Able to work on uneven surfaces, climb ladders and equipment.
- Able to work from a boom truck basket.
- Able to bend, walk, stand, and sit, occasionally with breaks.
- Follow safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Able to climb and work on tower structures above 50 feet.
- Three or more years of experience coordinating information from multiple sources to assign work and coordinate schedules.
- One or more years of experience analyzing computer‑generated reports.
- Able to multitask technical and office duties.
- One or more years of experience in budgeting and material management.
