This position is responsible for performing various job tasks on hazardous and non‐hazardous waste sites in the Mountain Region of the United States. Work may include exposure to lead, PCBs, H2S, arsenic, and other metals, chemicals, and conditions. Heavy equipment operation is a skilled trade involving the operation of excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, dump trucks, articulating dump trucks, tractors, motor graders, scrapers, and water trucks to excavate, grade, move earth, or demolish structures.

Operators may also repair and maintain equipment. Workdays exceed 8 hours per day, 5 to 6 days per week.

Essential Job Functions
  • Excavate, move, or grade contaminated or non‑contaminated earth.
  • Excavate contaminated or non‑contaminated sludge material.
  • Demolish structures including buildings, above‑ground storage tanks, underground pipelines, and other structures.
  • Mix reagents with contaminated soil or hazardous waste.
  • Read and understand construction specifications, plans, and operating procedures.
  • Cut and fill grades per plan specifications.
  • Load materials into trucks for removal from the project site.
  • Load and unload trucks for onsite transportation of materials.
  • Haul material in trucks to on‑site unloading area.
  • Perform daily inspection and maintenance on assigned equipment, including greasing and oiling.
  • Move materials, lay pipe, backfill pipe.
  • Load and unload equipment from trailers.
  • Lifting and setting heavy loads.
  • Assist with preparation and review of Job Safety Analyses, observations, and other reports.
  • Promote the use of Stop Work Authority.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Meet deadlines and contribute to a positive, safe, high‑quality culture in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and Visual Activities Required
  • Physical activities requiring climbing, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, handling, balancing, walking, stooping, squatting; use of hands, arms, and legs.
  • Use both hands, arms, feet, and legs while standing, walking, climbing, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, and feeling; talk, hear, and have visual discrimination and coordination.
  • Operate and understand written and spoken information related to equipment operations.
Physical Demands
  • Sitting for long periods in moving, vibrating, jerking, or stationary machinery.
  • Using equipment ladders, steps, and handholds while maintaining three points of contact to climb in and out of machinery regularly.
  • Repetitive motion from operating hand and foot controls of equipment.
  • Hand cleaning of tracks and undercarriages with small tools after working in wet and sloppy conditions.
  • Lifting objects weighing 1 to 25 lbs regularly; may be required to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Working in loud or noisy environments.
Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions
  • Rugged terrain that may be difficult to navigate.
  • Dusty and windy atmospheres.
  • Confined spaces.
  • Potential airborne exposures to dusts, mists, fumes, and vapors within OSHA permissible limits.
Personal Protective Equipment

Hard hat, ear protection (plugs or muffs), eye protection (safety glasses, goggles), safety vest, hand protection (gloves), steel‑toe boots, and negative or positive pressure respirators may be required depending on site conditions.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Must safely operate heavy equipment and be knowledgeable of their uses and limitations.
  • Experience: 3–5 years operating heavy equipment, preferably in environmental remediation projects.
  • Education: HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Completed OSHA HAZWOPER training including an annual 8‑hour refresher.
Benefits and Compensation

Full Time Pay: $27.00 - $32.00 per hour plus travel pay and per diem pay.
