2026 Pay Ranges (DOE):
Meter Technician I- $27.87 - $36.79/hr Meter Technician II- $30.85 - $40.72/hr
Job Summary Under specified supervision, performs routine, semi-skilled and skilled work in installation, inspection, repairs, maintains water meters and the maintenance and repair of water distribution system. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled internally by advancement from level I to level II, and when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Meter Technician I:
Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Meter Technician series. Incumbents are not required to have directly related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Instruction or changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as required. Meter Technician II:
Under general supervision, this is the journey-level class in the Meter Technician series. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of duties to work with considerable independence and initiative.

Operates and controls the processing of meter reading data to the Customer Information System for billing and revenue generation.
Monitors reports for meter reading and service request functions. Develops and retrieves database information for use in customer service activities. Inspects, installs, maintains, repairs, or replaces water meters, meter setters, meter pit domes and automated meter reading (AMR) components. Performs field service duties such as turn-on/off, pressure inspections, leak check or high consumption check. Tests water meters and automated meter reading (AMR) components for accuracy and performance.
Assembles, installs, calibrates, maintains, repairs, replaces and or removes water meters for commercial and residential accounts. Responds to customer service requests by answering questions, providing information, resolving complaints. Maintains records of water meters meter pit locations, confined spaces, etc. Directs traffic at work sites. Performs flagging, controls traffic and related safety functions at job sites. Interprets basic street map and blue prints.
While on-call, may perform water and wastewater pipeline maintenance, preventative maintenance at lift stations, water tanks, and pump stations. Operates vehicles used in construction and maintenance such as dump truck and snowplows. Operates air compressor and pneumatic air tools, bush cutters, jackhammers, and pressure washers. Perform minor, routine maintenance and inspections on equipment. May perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on equipment;
run tests; participates in the installation of equipment, performs field inspections. Paint and inspects valve, valve caps, fire hydrants, meter pits and other water appurtenances. Provides customer service as needed and reports problems to supervisor. May be required to be on 24-hour on-call status for snow removal and other emergencies. May be required to operate front-end loader for the purpose of loading materials into a dump truck.
May be required to operate a forklift for unloading of transport trailer loads of water meters and other equipment. May be required to work overtime. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience: Meter Technician I:
High School diploma or GED. Meter Technician II:
High School diploma or GED; one year of progressively responsible experience performing meter reading and maintenance duties. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Licensing/Certification Requirements: A valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, with a safe driving record. Meter Technician ll :
