Responsibilities Safety and Security

Maintain safety and security of the facility and work sites, conduct searches, monitor inmate behavior, respond to emergencies, perform inmate counts and transportation, document incidents, and enforce security procedures.

Operations

Ensure safe, efficient, compliant completion of all phases of boiler house operations, conduct regular checks, perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on boilers and peripheral systems, and collaborate with other trades.

Supervision

Supervise assigned inmate workers, set performance standards, assist in hiring, schedule work, evaluate wages, provide training, and promote high-level performance and ethics.

Compliance and Budget

Ensure compliance with Colorado Boiler Code, International Mechanical Code, American Correctional Association regulations, track usage of tools and parts, maintain the allotted budget, and identify inefficiencies to reduce waste and prevent theft.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of employment experience as a utility plant or boiler operator performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on steam or hydronic hot water boilers, pumps, motors, and plumbing, and/or installing and repairing boiler systems.
  • OR:
    Four (4) years of employment experience installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems that include hot water boilers or steam boilers above 15 psi.
  • OR:
    Combination of working experience totaling four (4) or more years, including at least two (2) years of the above experience, supplementary plumbing, pipe fitting, or HVAC maintenance, and correctional experience involving security duties such as detaining, controlling inmate movement, escorting, and conducting counts and searches.
  • Substitutions are accepted for formal apprenticeship or accredited degree programs that provide equivalent competencies.
Required Competencies

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and the ability to motivate co‑workers and inmates to work cooperatively.
  • Proficiency in boiler plant operations and predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on the boiler and peripheral systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain uninterrupted service in a high-stress, security-driven environment with mandatory reporting/logging guidelines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Strong desire to work cohesively as a team and to ensure organization and timely completion of repairs and maintenance.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain a safe and secure work environment and respond to emergency situations.
  • Attention to detail and efficient use of state resources.
  • Intermediate keyboarding skills, proficiency with electronic programs and email communication.
  • Self-control, resilience, and emotional stability in stressful or violent situations.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate fluently in English.
  • Knowledge of accessible document creation guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Stationary Engineer Certification.
  • Boiler Operator Certification.
  • Experience providing supervisory or work lead duties that affect pay, status, or tenure of subordinate staff or inmates.
