Position: Staff Software Engineer, Community

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Community team, you will lead the design, development, and delivery of user-facing features that enable learners, educators, and creators to connect and contribute on Quizlet. Working across backend systems and web applications, you’ll build scalable platforms and experiences for creating, organizing, and interacting within communities.

Location

Denver, Colorado – this is an onsite position. Employees are required to be in the office a minimum of three days per week:
Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive technical design, implementation, and delivery for complex projects that span systems, features, or teams.
  • Navigate evolving product spaces, define requirements and success metrics, and create clarity across engineering and cross‑functional partners.
  • Build and improve scalable, reliable, maintainable, and observable systems that support critical user experiences.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and engineering teams to deliver impactful features that improve learner and business outcomes.
  • Influence architectural decisions, identify high‑leverage opportunities, and help shape long‑term engineering investments.
  • Support growth of peers through technical guidance, design reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Break down large initiatives, coordinate execution across project teams, and proactively mitigate technical risks.
  • Establish and reinforce best practices across testing, observability, reliability, deployment, and developer workflows.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of engineering experience building and scaling consumer‑facing products, distributed systems, or platform capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives from concept through delivery, often coordinating execution across engineers, systems, or teams.
  • Strong experience with backend or full‑stack technologies, with the ability to contribute to architectural and implementation decisions across the stack.
  • Deep technical design expertise with a focus on scalability, maintainability, reliability, and long‑term system health.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and drive alignment across engineering and cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Experience aligning engineering execution with product goals and business outcomes through thoughtful prioritization, trade‑off analysis, and delivery planning.
  • A track record of improving systems, engineering practices, or developer workflows to increase reliability, efficiency, scalability, and team effectiveness.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team quality through technical leadership, feedback, and strong engineering practices.
Bonus Points
  • Experience building and scaling education‑focused or consumer‑facing applications.
  • Full‑stack experience across backend systems and web applications.
  • Experience with community‑driven or multi‑user experiences, or systems that drive user motivation and engagement.
  • Experience working in environments with high data or performance requirements.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting base salary of $190,000 – $245,000 depending on location and experience, plus company stock options.
