Are you an embedded software engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of hardware and software?
We're partnered with a pioneering aerospace company developing next-generation robotic and autonomous systems designed to operate in some of the most challenging environments imaginable. They're looking for a Staff Embedded Software Engineer – Middleware to serve as a technical leader responsible for Linux kernel development, board bring-up, and low-level software architecture for advanced avionics platforms.

The OpportunityAs the subject matter expert for embedded Linux and middleware development, you'll lead the design, integration, and deployment of kernel-level software that powers sophisticated robotic and avionics systems.
You'll collaborate closely with systems, hardware, autonomy, and robotics teams to build fault‑tolerant software capable of supporting autonomous operations in demanding environments while mentoring engineers and helping define software best practices across the organization.
What You'll Be Doing- Lead Linux kernel configuration, customization, and deployment activities
- Design, develop, integrate, and maintain kernel‑level software for advanced avionics platforms
- Perform board bring‑up activities, including:
- Boot loader configuration
- Develop and integrate device drivers for mission‑critical subsystems
- Implement task scheduling, memory partitioning, and timing architectures for safety‑critical systems
- Collaborate with hardware, robotics, and systems engineering teams to develop fault‑tolerant operating system configurations
- Support hardware/software integration through simulators, engineering models, and hardware‑in‑the‑loop environments
- Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and optimize real‑time system behavior
- Create and maintain technical documentation to certification‑quality standards
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across embedded software initiatives
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience developing embedded software for robotics, aerospace, avionics, or other mission‑critical systems
- 3+ years of Linux kernel development, BSP customization, or low‑level platform software experience
- Strong C programming skills for embedded systems
- Experience with:
- Performance optimization
- Timing analysis
- Familiarity with communication interfaces such as:
- SPI
- RS-422 / RS-485
- ADCs
- Space Wire
- Understanding of deterministic networking, SMP architectures, and safety‑critical software design
- Human‑rated or safety‑critical systems
- NASA Core Flight System (cFS)
- Vx Works
- Time‑Sensitive Networking (TSN)
- BSP development and low‑level firmware integration
- OCI containerization
- Hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing environments
