JOB OVERVIEW
The Driver is responsible for providing safe, timely, and courteous transportation for residents to and from various activities while maintaining quality service. The role includes maintaining paperwork and records, performing monthly and pre‑trip vehicle inspections, ensuring effective communication with residents and families, and notifying the Assisted Living Coordinator (ALC) or Reminiscence Coordinator (RC) of any changes in a resident’s condition or behavior.
The Driver also reads the Daily Log and makes appropriate entries as needed.
As part of the Sunrise team, the Driver supports the organization’s Mission, Principles of Service, and Core Values. The essential responsibilities include:
- Provide transportation services for residents.
- Assist residents with special needs during transportation, such as carrying packages, opening doors, and helping them in and out of the vehicle.
- Maintain focus on driving at all times, directing tasks and passenger interactions to on‑board support staff while the vehicle is in motion.
- Do not use a personal cell phone while performing Driver duties.
- Provide miscellaneous pickup and delivery services as needed.
- Demonstrate positive resident relations.
- Follow safety, loss prevention, and infection control procedures.
- Coordinate the activities of other Sunrise Senior Living team members who are performing in a driver assistance role, “spotter”, or resident care capacity.
- Possess competent knowledge of the local area, including traffic patterns, to estimate travel times and plan routes.
- Observe and consider resident safety.
- Report any resident’s change of condition to ALC and/or RC.
- Maintain all community vehicles in good working condition, including cleanliness, equipment checks, and full operation of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, and blood spill clean‑up kits.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance as directed by Sunrise policy and applicable regulations.
- Maintain all tools, equipment, and supplies in proper condition.
- Assist with vehicle registration and license plate renewal processes.
- Inspect and document vehicle condition monthly and per trip, completing the approved Sunrise forms.
- Handle and store oxygen and other potentially dangerous materials following policy and authority requirements.
- Partner with the community team to ensure compliance with national and provincial regulations related to occupational health and safety.
- Practice safety procedures at all times, including use of PPE, fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets, and Lockout Tagout.
- Complete and pass all pre‑employment, post‑accident, and annual random drug and alcohol screening as required.
- Attend in‑services per federal and provincial regulations and as needed.
- Respond in a timely manner to requests and concerns from residents, family members, and team members.
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of resident information.
- Notify the ALC and/or RC of any resident concern and/or change in condition.
- Report all vehicle accidents, incidents, and safety problems immediately to the Executive Director.
- Review, read, notate, and initial the Daily Log and Maintenance Log for any needs or requests and to learn about resident changes.
- Train Sunrise team members on driving, driver assistance procedures, vehicle maintenance, and safety as needed.
- Adhere to regulations and Sunrise policies pertaining to driving.
- Assist in activities when there are no outings.
- Participate as a team member and commit to working toward team goals.
- Demonstrate the Team Member Credo in daily interactions.
- Commit to serving residents and guests through the Principles of Service.
- Contribute to engagement programs, including participation in surveys and improvement workshops.
- Attend regular meetings such as Town Hall, Department Team, and others as directed.
- Maintain compliance with required training and all regulatory training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
