Position Details
  • Teacher Assistant, Sub Bus Driver – St. James Elementary School (2 positions available)
  • Permanent / full‑time / 10‑months / 6 hours per day
  • Benefit‑eligible: paid holidays, sick leave, annual leave, retirement, hospitalization insurance
  • Dual‑employment position that requires fulfilling both roles.

Classroom Teacher, Principal, or Assistant Principal

Salary

Teacher Assistant:
Grade 59 ($16.48 – $22.23 per hour); plus local supplement, if applicable

Sub Bus Driver:
Grade 58 ($15.00 – $17.62 per hour)

The salary for this position is based upon the successful applicant’s years of service in the NC State Retirement System in the same or similar position. Experience outside of this system is not recognized for pay purposes. For current Lincoln County School employees, this position will be paid according to the current Lincoln County Schools’ pay scale.

Nature of Work

The Teacher Assistant/Sub Bus Driver provides direct support to students and teachers.

  • Works one‑on‑one with students to assist with academics, behavioral challenges, and personal/self‑help skills.
  • Leads small group activities and reinforces teacher‑directed lessons.
  • Assists teachers with general housekeeping, clerical tasks, and personal care needs of students.
  • Supports the classroom environment to ensure high‑quality instruction and student success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must pass a drug test, background check, and TB test prior to employment.
  • Meet one of the following ESSA requirements:
    • Hold an Associate’s degree or higher in any area; OR
    • Complete 30 semester hours of college coursework in any area; OR
    • Earn passing scores on the Work Keys Test (offered at CVCC):
      • Workplace Documents:
        Level 4+
      • Applied Math:
        Level 4+
      • Business Writing:
        Level 3+
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record qualifying for a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License/NCCDL.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain bus driver certification and comply with all transportation safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective methods for working with students and supporting instruction.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 20 lbs constantly.
Areas of Responsibility
  • Support classroom teachers in delivering high‑quality instruction.
  • Provide individualized and small group support to students.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and on field trips.
  • Assist with clerical, organizational, and instructional preparation tasks.
  • Ensure student safety, discipline, and engagement in all learning environments.
  • Operate a school bus to safely transport students to and from school and activities.
Job Functions and Duties Instructional Support
  • Provide one‑on‑one and small group instruction under the teacher’s direction.
  • Reinforce lessons, monitor student work, and encourage achievement.
  • Demonstrate activities and keep students on task.
  • Prepare instructional materials, visual aids, and classroom setup.
  • Assist with grading, recording, and distributing materials.
  • Serve as substitute teacher or testing proctor as assigned.
Student Supervision and Support
  • Support students with self‑help skills, personal care, and social development.
  • Monitor and redirect student behavior, reinforcing positive conduct.
  • Encourage respect for others and help resolve minor conflicts.
  • Observe and report student progress, behavior, and concerns to the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
Clerical and Organizational Duties
  • Record attendance, grades, health data, and behavioral information.
  • File and maintain records in accordance with requirements.
  • Organize and store classroom materials.
  • Attend workshops and professional development sessions.
Bus Driver Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a school bus in accordance with state and district regulations.
  • Transport students to and from school and school‑related activities.
