Position Title: Staff Accountant
Department: Administration
Reports To: Director of Finance
Location: Northern New Jersey (Denville, NJ)
Position SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our growing construction organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background with direct experience in the construction industry, including job cost accounting, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, project accounting, AIA billing and subcontractor compliance.
Experience with the Foundation® Accounting Software (Foundation General Ledger System) is highly preferred.
The Senior Accountant will play a key role in managing the monthly close process, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting project operations, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
Key Responsibilities General Accounting- Prepare and record monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure financial transactions are properly recorded.
- Maintain the accounts receivable subledger and ensure financial transactions are properly recorded and cash receipts are accurately recorded.
- Analyze financial data and prepare financial statements and management reports.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Maintain and monitor job cost accounting and project profitability.
- Review project costs for accuracy and proper coding.
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Assist with project revenue recognition in accordance with company policies and applicable accounting standards.
- Reconcile construction projects, committed costs, subcontractor billings, and change orders.
- Support project managers with job cost reporting and financial analysis.
- Monitor project-related accruals and ensure timely cost recognition.
- Utilize the Foundation General Ledger System for daily accounting operations.
- Generate and distribute financial and operational reports from Foundation.
- Collaborate with operational teams / project managers to ensure accurate project and cost reporting.
- Participate in system enhancements, upgrades, testing, and process improvements.
- Assist with annual financial audits and tax preparation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Support insurance audits, certified payroll reporting, and other construction-related compliance requirements.
- Maintain internal controls and documentation supporting financial transactions.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- 5+ years of accounting experience required.
- 3+ years of construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Hands‑on experience with Foundation Accounting Software
, including the Accounts Receivable and Billing module, preferred. - Experience with job costing, WIP schedules, project accounting, AIA billing and revenue recognition.
- Experience supporting audits and financial statement preparation.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling for project costs.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills with both finance and operational teams.
- Ability to work independently while contributing within a team environment.
- Experience in commercial construction, subcontracting, civil, or specialty contracting industries.
- Extensive experience with AIA billing, lien waivers, and subcontractor management.
- Experience with project forecasting and profitability analysis.
- Knowledge of payroll and labor cost accounting within a construction environment.
