Preconstruction Estimator (Solar)
Overview
The Preconstruction Estimator is responsible for developing accurate, complete, and buildable project pricing for commercial solar installations. This role owns the Bill of Materials (BOM), vendor and subcontractor pricing, and ensures all proposals are grounded in real-world constructability and cost.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Pricing
- Own full project cost development for commercial solar proposals
- Build detailed BOMs from plan sets and preliminary designs
- Develop accurate labor and subcontractor pricing
- Validate pricing aligns with project scope and constructability
- Source and maintain relationships with equipment vendors and subcontractors
- Request and evaluate quotes for materials and labor
- Track pricing trends and lead times to inform proposals
- Review plan sets for feasibility, code considerations, and installation approach
- Identify risks, gaps, and cost drivers early in the process
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams to ensure buildable designs
- Participate in internal proposal reviews prior to release
- Ensure all pricing meets company margin targets
- Support change order pricing and cost validation during project execution
- Strong electrical background with understanding of commercial solar systems
- Experience building material takeoffs (BOM) from plan sets
- Familiarity with NEC, interconnection basics, and commercial construction practices
- Ability to evaluate subcontractor scope and pricing
- Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
