Job SummaryA Vascular Access Nurse provides access to a patient’s circulatory system through the insertion of a Vascular Access Device (VAD). VADs can range from IVs, Peripheral IVs (PIVs), and Midlines to Central Venous Catheters (CVCs), including Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs).
Required Experience- Five year’s nursing experience
- Two year’s experience in PICC/Midline insertions
- Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) preferred
- Provide patient consultations for Vascular Access Device appropriateness using diagnosis, intravenous plan of therapy, prognosis, and medical/surgical history.
- Follow the national Standards of Practice set by the Infusion Nurses Society.
- Set up and perform vascular access procedures as ordered in accordance with skill‑set. Appropriately trained and credentialed clinicians may set up and perform basic (PICC, Midline, peripheral IV) insertion.
- Understand and use all required infection prevention measures, including hand washing, PPE, and maximal sterile field.
- Use ultrasound guidance when appropriate for VAD access.
- Understand and perform complete documentation and full report to the licensed personnel caring for the patient post‑insertion.
- Ensure compliance with all facility policies and procedures regarding clinical practice and infection control.
- Troubleshoot/declot obstructed central line catheters.
- Monitor PICC/Midline and educate staff on prevention of line infection and routine care.
- Submit surveillance data for Quality and Infection Control.
- Provide infusion consultation services to enhance the intravenous skills of the nursing staff through bedside teaching, central line troubleshooting, and consultation on any infusion therapy questions.
- Teach patients and staff how to care for the line.
- Understand the Nurse Practice Act in the state of practice.
- Work independently and provide comprehensive reporting within a group.
- Adapt to new environments and techniques.
- Communicate and teach with excellence.
- Willingly maintain and improve knowledge level related to vascular access with seminars, magazines, books, and more.
- Remain aware of situations with a focus on patient and client experience.
- Maintain a positive professional demeanor, with strong self‑evaluation skills.
