Position
Permanent Rail Support Technician (Electrical biased) based in Derby.

ShiftsMonday - Thursday 08:00 - 17:00 / Friday 08:00 - 14:30
Salary£30,000 - £32,000
Primary Purpose of the RoleCarry out overhauls and repairs in a workshop environment on various rail projects, including traction motors, fans & heaters, and water cooler pumps. The role involves:
- Isolating power sources and lockout/tagout all electrical systems.
- Gathering tools, cleaning agents, PPE, and documentation (electrical schematics, manuals).
- Setting up a clean work bench and organized workspace for disassembly.
- Disassembling components in a logical sequence and storing fasteners and small parts in clearly marked containers.
- Inspecting mechanical components for wear, corrosion, cracks, or deformation.
- Inspecting electrical wiring, connectors, and insulation for damage.
- Identifying parts that need repair or replacement.
- Cleaning components using appropriate chemicals (degreasers, contact cleaners, etc.).
- Removing dirt, corrosion, and old lubricants and ensuring components are fully dry.
- Using a multimeter to test continuity, resistance, and voltage where applicable.
- Verifying integrity of electrical circuits, switches, and connections, flagging faulty components for replacement.
- Repairing or replacing damaged or worn parts and reconditioning components when possible.
- Reassembling components in reverse order of disassembly, following torque specs and alignment guidelines, and reconnecting electrical systems carefully.
- Performing functional testing of the full system, checking for proper operation under normal conditions, verifying safety systems and fail‑safes, and documenting results.
Ensuring high levels of productivity, attendance, and customer satisfaction are maintained at all times.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Carry out routine maintenance and repairs on various mechanical equipment.
- Strip and rewire electrical components, performing electrical testing.
- Use electrical knowledge, fault finding, and replacing electrical components.
- Use in‑house reporting to ensure all work is quoted and completed on time.
- Pressure wash and clean components using various chemicals.
- Read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Complete maintenance records and documentation accurately.
- Ensure workspace is clean and organized at all times.
- Follow all Health and Safety procedures.
- Work as part of a team to meet operational deadlines.
- Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.
- Experience of working within a similar role.
- Effective and professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Detail‑oriented and able to multitask.
- Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
- Logical troubleshooting skills.
- Previous experience in the rolling‑stock/rail industry.
- Electrical knowledge, fault finding, and replacing electrical components.
- Ability to read mechanical engineering drawings.
- Full UK clean driving licence.
- Forklift truck licence and overhead crane licence.
