Brown Winick Law Firm - Tax Specialist

The Tax Specialist supports the firm’s tax practice by preparing and processing a wide range of tax filings, maintaining compliance systems, and assisting with client service delivery. This role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and a high level of confidentiality. The Tax Specialist works both independently and collaboratively to support tax attorneys, manage workflows, and ensure timely, accurate filings.

Education

& Experience
  • Associate degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field (Bachelor’s preferred)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in tax preparation, bookkeeping, or tax administration
  • Experience preparing federal and state tax returns (individual, corporate, partnership, fiduciary, and nonprofit) preferred
  • Proficiency with tax software (e.g. Thomson Reuters, Pro System, similar) and Quick Books
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word)
  • Experience with e-filing systems and compliance tracking tools preferred
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential functions are the primary responsibilities of the position and may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Prepare and process a variety of tax returns, including individual, corporate, partnership, fiduciary, foundation, payroll, and excise tax filings
  • Manage e-filing processes, including submission, tracking, and resolution of rejected filings
  • Prepare and distribute tax organizers,1099s, W-2s, and other required tax documents
  • File extensions and ensure all federal, state, and local filing deadlines are met
  • Maintain accurate tax records, documentation, and electronic filing systems
  • Perform bookkeeping services for designated clients, including account reconciliations and journal entries using Quick Books
  • Prepare financial reports such as trial balances, financial statements, and supporting schedules
  • Assist with quarterly tax projections and periodic compliance filings (e.g., sales tax, household employee reporting)
  • Communicate with clients to gather information, clarify documentation, and provide status updates
  • Conduct basic tax compliance research and support attorneys with documentation and analysis
  • Administer tax software systems, including user setup, annual roll-forwards, and authorization renewals
  • Track key deadlines and proactively manage workflow to meet peak season demands
  • Provide guidance and support to team members on tax systems and processes
  • Order and manage tax-related supplies and resources
  • Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Strong understanding of tax preparation processes, compliance requirements, and bookkeeping principles
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, including proofreading and data validation skills
  • Ability to analyze information and resolve issues using sound judgment
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software, Quick Books, and Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with attorneys, staff, and clients
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive financial and client information
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, especially during peak tax season
  • Ability to learn and apply new systems, processes, and regulatory updates
Additional Role Expectations
  • This position is primarily performed in an office environment
  • Work may occasionally require more than 40 hours per week, including irregular hours, to meet business or client needs
  • Ability to sit, stand, use a computer, and operate standard office equipment for extended periods
