Safety Manager

The Safety Manager leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Iowa State Fair Authority’s workplace safety program. This position will build the safety program from the ground up, establishing policies, procedures, training, documentation, and employee engagement initiatives that promote a safe and healthy workplace.

The Safety Manager serves as a resource for employees and leaders, partners with departments to identify and reduce workplace risks, coordinates workers’ compensation activities, and ensures compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

• Build, implement, and maintain a comprehensive organization-wide safety program.
• Develop safety policies, procedures, programs, and standards appropriate for year-round operations and the unique demands of Fair season.
• Establish systems for identifying, assessing, and reducing workplace hazards.
• Monitor compliance with OSHA and other applicable safety regulations and requirements.
• Maintain required safety records, reports, documentation, and regulatory postings.
• Coordinate safety inspections, audits, and corrective action plans.
• Partner with department leaders to address safety concerns and implement practical solutions.
• Monitor regulatory changes and recommend updates to policies and practices as needed.

• Develop and deliver engaging safety training for employees, supervisors, seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.
• Establish required training programs, schedules, and documentation.
• Create safety communications, resources, and campaigns that make safety an everyday part of the workplace.
• Develop initiatives that encourage employee participation, hazard reporting, and shared accountability for workplace safety.
• Coach supervisors and managers on safety responsibilities, incident response, and employee safety expectations.
• Promote a positive, proactive safety culture focused on prevention rather than responding to incidents.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for workplace injuries and workers’ compensation matters.
• Coordinate the workers’ compensation process with employees, supervisors, medical providers, insurance representatives, and other partners.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation related to workplace injuries and claims.
• Coordinate timely incident reporting and follow-up.
• Conduct or coordinate workplace incident investigations to identify contributing factors and opportunities for prevention.
• Track trends in injuries, claims, and incidents and provide recommendations to reduce future occurrences.
• Support return-to-work and transitional work processes in coordination with Human Resources and appropriate medical and insurance partners.

• Develop standardized safety procedures, checklists, forms, inspection tools, and documentation.
• Create clear processes for reporting injuries, hazards, near misses, and safety concerns.
• Establish systems to track corrective actions and ensure follow-through.
• Develop department-specific safety procedures based on job duties and workplace risks.
• Regularly evaluate safety processes and recommend improvements.
• Maintain organized, accessible safety records and documentation.
• Develop and implement safety plans for Fair-time operations and major events.
• Conduct safety assessments of facilities, work areas, equipment, and operational activities.
• Partner with Maintenance, Operations, Event Services, Human Resources, and other departments to address safety risks.
