Terracon has an opportunity for a Construction Materials Technician I to join our team in Des Moines, IA. The role involves observing and testing construction materials such as soils, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, and asphalt. Responsibilities include communicating results to Project Managers and other stakeholders, and performing tests on building construction projects in the local area and in Terracon laboratories. Successful candidates receive in‑depth technical training and professional certifications within 1‑2 years.

EssentialRole and Responsibilities
- Under direction of senior technicians, staff professionals or project managers, assist with tasks and perform basic sample tests and observation of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel and asphalt.
- Document and prepare sample testing and observation data using a laptop or tablet; submit findings accurately to a Project Manager.
- Effectively communicate testing and inspection results.
- Will be placed in a progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
- Ensure that all testing equipment and tools are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Perform pre‑task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Maintain quality standards on all projects.
- Transport materials safely from various job sites to the lab using a company‑provided full‑size pickup truck.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 6 months’ experience
- Ability to obtain American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 or American Technical Institute (ATI) Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification within 90 days of start
- Successful completion of related internal safety and technical certifications
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
- Obtain Nuclear Density Gauge certification within 6 months of hire
- Current industry certifications for materials testing is a plus, but not required
