Retail/Business Reporter for The Des Moines Register/, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeking a retail-focused reporter who can lead coverage of this consumer-focused topic.
Responsibilities- Lead coverage of the retail beat, including boardroom decisions of Hy-Vee and coverage of small business owners dealing with economic shifts.
- Provide news on consumer-oriented topics, including trends, store openings and closings, and online activity, for Iowa readers.
- File quick stories on daily developments and also produce explanatory, narrative, watchdog, retail/ecommerce, shopping trend, and consumer-scam stories.
- Offer thoughtful analysis of complex issues and build deep connections with people in the community, from executives to shoppers.
- Create photo and video work to expand journalism, collaborating with the Register’s social and multimedia staffers.
- Be willing to experiment and innovate to reach audiences; continually improve skills through internal and Gannett-wide training programs.
- Work with experienced editors and, on occasion, partner with other veteran reporters on projects.
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three years of experience in professional journalism, writing, and reporting.
- Understanding of metrics, social media, and SEO.
- Solid news judgment.
- Self-motivation and self-direction.
- Top-notch planning, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Command of media law and ethical conduct principles.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and minimum liability insurance required by state law.
