Staff Writer Business Record Part Time

Overview

Business Publications Corporation (BPC) is seeking a part-time journalist, 5-20 hours per week, to cover business news in Greater Des Moines for the Business Record, our flagship division. The right candidate will join our experienced staff to lead the Business Record’s coverage of the people, issues and trends affecting the business community as the region continues to grow and transform. This reporter will produce business stories on a variety of topics, and specific areas of focus will be determined based on areas of experience and interest.

• Write for a variety of formats including the weekly print edition, website, e-newsletters and specialty magazines; cover a broad range of business topics.
• Work with a high degree of autonomy, build sources, and manage story schedules.
• Generate a majority of your own story ideas and report daily business news items quickly and efficiently for the website.
• Keep a daily pulse on the Des Moines business community and report on local issues and trends.

• Strong writing ability with a solid foundation in AP style and journalism principles; willingness to represent the Business Record in-person, virtually and via social media.
• Previous business writing experience is a plus but not required; the role welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds.
• Basic photography skills and video production experience are a plus, but not required, as is the ability to contribute to digital growth efforts.
• A passion for Des Moines and Iowa and a desire to tell community stories.
