Job Overview

We’re seeking an experienced radio news anchor and reporter with a strong background in live anchoring. This is not an entry-level position. It is inside our Des Moines newsroom and cannot be done from a remote location.

The ideal candidate is skilled in audio recording and editing for broadcast, with excellent comprehension, writing, and editorial judgment. This is for weekend mornings in multiple major markets.

• Write, record, and edit audio for broadcast news stories
• Write and publish news content for web and social media
• Monitor sources for breaking news, e.g., wires and social media
• Plan, write, edit, and voice news broadcasts
• Finalize content using digital audio editing software
• Maintain crucial deadlines in order to provide news stories in a timely fashion
• Repackage content from producers and field reporters for newscasts

• Expertise using Microsoft Office suite and social networking platforms
• Knowledgeable and up-to-date on local and national trends and/or have specialized knowledge of subjects/events related to on-air topics
• Pleasant, charismatic and well-controlled voice; excellent pronunciation
• Well-rounded communication skills for conducting interviews
• Excellent writing and editing skills; proficient in grammar
• Proficiency in media production and broadcast systems
• Ability to plan and organize, set priorities and multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment
• Bilingualism is a plus
• 3+ years’ experience in on‑air journalism in smaller market or college station
• 4‑year college degree, preferably in Broadcast Journalism or Communications

• Ability to work within prescribed guidelines without needing close supervision
• Problem‑solving skills within established procedures
• Understanding of when to seek guidance for unforeseen problems
• Close attention to detail
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to act in a professional manner and collaborate with colleagues of different levels
